Swiss police are investigating human remains found in bags in the Rhine near Basel. Officers say all signs point to a violent crime.
GENEVA: Parts of a man’s body were found in the Rhine river near Switzerland’s border with Germany, police said, adding investigators suspect he may have been the victim of a violent crime.
The remains were found on Sunday after three men walking along the riverbank in the town of Stein, near Basel, spotted a bag floating in the water.
When they pulled it ashore, they found a human leg inside, Aargau cantonal police said.
Police later recovered several more bags containing other body parts during searches involving divers and a boat.
“Everything points to the individual having been the victim of a violent crime,” police said, noting the circumstances of the killing and the identity of any suspect remain unknown.
Authorities have appealed for witnesses, and prosecutors have opened a criminal investigation.
