Weekend TV wouldn’t be complete without a good game show — and over the decades we’ve had no shortage of them keeping us entertained on a Saturday night.
From The 1% Club through to Ant and Dec’s Limitless Win and The Wheel, we’re all still turning on in our millions to watch contestants showing off their skills to win big prizes or a life-changing sum of money.
And while they might seem easy enough at home when you’re shouting the answers at the telly, sometimes even the most skilled of contestants can crack under the pressure of the cameras.
Take the newest game show on the Saturday night block, the John Bishop-fronted Wisdom Of The Crowd.
The show, from the same people who brought you The 1% Club, is actually inspired by a scientific discovery: over 100 years ago scientist Francis Galton visited a farmers’ fair where a competition was being held to guess the weight of an ox — a competition entered by more than 800 people.
The scientist looked at all the guesses and was amazed to discover that the average guess of everyone put together was so accurate that it was even better than the best individual guess.
He referred to the concept of Wisdom Of The Crowd, unaware that it would be snapped up by the BBC and turned into a game show over a century later, with contestants taking on the combined might of the watching studio in a bid to win £10,000.
As Bishop explains: ‘It’s based on science, but it’s also fun. It’s one of those shows that everyone can watch and get involved in.
‘Which is where you come in. Because like many game shows before it, playing along at home to see how well you might do in the hotseat is all part of the fun.’
So, if you think your brain power can outperform a collective, below are 17 questions to see how you get on, with answers at the end…
