The Nairobi Securities Exchange (NSE) added 333,043 investors in the nine months to September 2026, more than three times the number recorded over the same period last year, as rising share prices and new listings drew renewed interest in equities. Capital Markets Authority (CMA) data shows the reported investor base reached 2.36 million at the end of September, up from 2.027 million at the start of the year. The growth comes as the stock market delivers stronger returns than several competing investment options, while the return of major public offerings has widened the range of securities available to investors.
The additions during the nine-month period exceeded the 174,400 investors added in the whole of 2025 and came close to the 346,616 recorded over the four years to December 2025. The acceleration marks a sharp change from the subdued growth recorded during the market’s prolonged bear run, when falling share prices and limited new listings weakened investor appetite. The rally that began in 2024 has since lifted valuations and renewed interest in a market that is again attracting public attention.
NSE investor additions surpass the previous four-year total
CMA data shows the NSE added 98,063 investors in the nine months to September 2025, compared with 333,043 in the corresponding period this year. The latest additions were approximately 3.4 times the previous year’s figure, representing growth of nearly 240%. The increase also exceeded the 55,060 investors added in 2022, 58,400 in 2023 and 58,756 in 2024, following stronger additions of 98,116 in 2020 and 138,741 in 2021.
The expansion has coincided with a strong rally in share prices. Market capitalisation reached KSh4.12 trillion at the end of September, up from KSh2.94 trillion at the close of 2025, as the combined value of listed shares climbed. The NSE first crossed the KSh4 trillion threshold on August 3, less than a year after reaching KSh3 trillion in November 2025.
CMA chief executive Wyckliffe Shamiah said the strong performance during the quarter, including market capitalisation crossing KSh4 trillion for the first time, demonstrated confidence, resilience and competitiveness in Kenya’s capital markets. The rally has increased the paper value of existing holdings while making equities more attractive to investors seeking higher returns on their savings.
The investor additions have occurred alongside an increase in trading activity. Equity turnover reached KSh395 billion in the nine months to September, compared with KSh145 billion for the whole of 2025. The increase reflects a combination of stronger market participation and large transactions, including a KSh204.3 billion Safaricom block trade that accounted for approximately half of the nine-month turnover.
New listings widen investment opportunities
The return of major public offerings has given investors more opportunities to buy into Kenyan businesses through the exchange. Kenya Pipeline Company’s March IPO involved 11.81 billion shares offered at KSh9 each, ending an 11-year drought in major listings. The offer brought a large state-owned enterprise into the public market and created a new investment opportunity for retail and institutional investors.
Family Bank followed in June with a listing by introduction involving 1.66 billion shares at an introductory price of KSh18. The transaction allowed existing shareholders to trade their holdings on the exchange, widening public access to the bank’s shares without taking the same form as a conventional IPO that raises fresh capital from the public.
Quickmart’s public offer has added another major transaction to the market’s recovery. The retailer’s offer, alongside the introduction of Trific Green I-REIT and Africa Logistics Properties’ dollar-denominated REIT, has expanded the range of listed investment products. These developments give investors more ways to gain exposure to businesses and property-related assets through the capital markets.
The listings have also helped revive activity among brokers, investment banks and other intermediaries involved in bringing securities to the market. The NSE’s recovery has therefore coincided with both an expanding investor base and a wider selection of listed assets, giving investors more reasons to consider equities as part of their portfolios.
Rising share prices strengthen equities’ appeal
The stock market’s performance has made equities one of the strongest-performing investment classes in Kenya in 2026. The source figures put NSE returns above 33%, compared with average bank deposit returns of 6.94% at the end of September and Treasury bill yields below 10%. The gap has made shares more attractive to investors willing to accept market risk in pursuit of higher returns.
Government securities remain an important alternative for investors seeking income. The government has reopened long-dated bonds offering coupons below 14%, while unit trust returns have largely reflected the yields available from Treasury bills, short-term bonds and fixed cash deposits. These funds provide access to diversified portfolios, although their returns depend on the underlying assets and applicable fees.
Property has also offered a different return profile. Data from the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics showed rental price growth of about 2.2% in Nairobi and its satellite towns during the first six months of the year, while standalone house prices rose by 3.1%. Against this background, the stronger performance of listed shares has attracted investors seeking capital appreciation and dividends.
Dividends have also supported demand for shares, particularly among local institutional investors. Their participation has helped sustain activity even as foreign investors sold holdings in response to global uncertainty linked to geopolitical tensions. For investors comparing the available options, the combination of price gains and dividend income has strengthened the case for equities, although market returns vary between companies and over time.
Digital access is opening new routes to the stock market
Digital investment channels are another part of the changing market environment. Ziidi Trader has expanded access to the NSE through M-PESA, providing a route for users to trade listed shares through a mobile platform. The growth of such services creates a more accessible entry point for investors who might otherwise find conventional brokerage processes difficult to navigate.
TechTrendsKE’s earlier reporting on Ziidi Trader described its expansion to foreign passport holders and the broader effort to make stock-market access available through digital services. The platform’s role is relevant to the investor-growth story because easier access can help more people participate, while new investment products broaden the range of assets available through the market.
The NSE has also been pursuing new investment products and international market links, including proposals intended to give Kenyan investors access to global securities. Such developments could expand the range of investment choices available locally, alongside shares, bonds and property investment vehicles already traded through the market.
Access alone, however, is only one part of investor participation. The commercial impact depends on whether people fund their accounts, buy and sell securities and remain active over time. That distinction matters for the wider market because registrations, completed trades and the value of transactions measure different aspects of investor engagement.
A bigger investor base raises questions about market participation
The rapid increase in investor numbers marks a major development for the NSE, but the wider implications depend on how that growth translates into sustained activity. A larger pool of registered investors can create a broader base for future trading, while more listings give participants additional opportunities to invest. The market’s recent performance has helped attract attention, but the durability of that interest will depend on company earnings, dividends, liquidity and the availability of suitable investment products.
The distribution of investors also remains an important dimension of participation. CMA data shows men accounted for 1.593 million, or 67.5%, of the reported retail investor base at the end of September, compared with 767,472 women. The figures show that men continue to account for the larger share of reported retail investors, while the overall increase in registrations has expanded the market’s reach.
The NSE’s challenge is to build on the renewed interest and translate it into a deeper market with regular trading across a broader range of listed securities. The strong performance of the past two years, the return of major listings and the arrival of new investment products have improved the market’s appeal. Sustained participation would give investors more opportunities to trade, help listed companies reach a wider shareholder base and support the brokers and other institutions that make the market function.
