‘A Different World’ Reboot a ‘Masterful’ Reflection of HBCUs

A new generation of students stepped onto the fictional Hillman College’s lush Virginia campus this fall. For historically Black colleges and university alumni and researchers, the reboot of A Different World represents the challenges facing HBCUs and their students in 2026 without losing the magic of the original.

Thirty-nine years after A Different World premiered on NBC as a spin-off of The Cosby Show and tackled issues like racism, the HIV/AIDS epidemic and drug use, the Netflix reboot digs into the pressures on today’s HBCU campuses. Students, faculty and administrators—including some original characters and their children—navigate federal funding cuts, terrorist bomb threats and deportation risks to students.

The new show is also part of a larger “HBCU investment and excitement era,” said Walter M. Kimbrough, executive vice president of the United Negro College Fund.

That investment includes large donations from philanthropists such as MacKenzie Scott, who has given more than $1 billion to HBCUs in recent years. Meanwhile, notable HBCU alumni such as former Vice President Kamala Harris and attention from celebrities, such as Beyoncé, who set her 2019 documentary Homecoming at an HBCU, have raised the profile of these institutions and contributed to growing enrollment at some HBCUs, even as many predominantly white institutions struggle to enroll students.

“Now you have a reboot of this iconic show that generations of people have watched to get a glimpse of what HBCU life is like,” Kimbrough said. “Applications have been up as a whole, but I think this [reboot] could fuel it even more … It just builds into this era that we’re in in terms of understanding HBCUs.”

The show glamorizes some aspects of life on an HBCU campus—like the ladies’ luxe dorm suites—but is otherwise grounded in the reality of the HBCU experience, experts say.

“I just thought it was masterful,” said Yolanda Watson Spiva, president of Complete College America, who watched the 1987 debut one year before she enrolled at Spelman College.

When Watson Spiva watched the show in her Spelman dorm’s common area, she said, “It almost felt like your world was being depicted on television.” Now a higher ed expert and the mother of a first-year Spelman student, she said, “Everything you can think of is really true to form.”

‘Everything Was Realistic’

The 2026 iteration of A Different World follows Hillman President Dwayne Wayne and beauty mogul Whitley Gilbert’s daughter Deborah (not “Debra”) and Ron Johnson’s son Shaquille in their freshman year at Hillman.

Despite racial homogeneity, the show reflects the broad diversity of students at HBCUs. Deborah and Shaquille are joined by new friends Kojo, a fashion-obsessed Brit with traditional African parents; Rashida, an overachiever from Compton; Amir, a queer student from Harlem who was previously involved with the justice system; and Hazel, who loves pastel colors, pageants and Jesus.

The students face age-old trials over personal finances, academics and heartbreak, while the showrunners naturally wove in contemporary issues including activism, student athletes’ NIL rights, the controversial use of artificial intelligence and neurodiversity.

Along the way, the students are supported by Hillman alumni (played by original cast members) including Freddie Brooks, their law professor; Kimberly Reese Boyer, now a heart surgeon and guest lecturer; Jaleesa Vinson-Taylor and Colonel Bradford Taylor, now donors trying to save the financially struggling institution; and Lena James, now a congresswoman representing Baltimore.

The alumni involvement is another accurate representation of HBCU communities, Watson Spiva said.

The series draws from the real-world experiences of current and former HBCU students. Debbie Allen, a Howard University graduate who served as chief creative officer on the original series, returned as executive producer and director. Netflix hired HBCU students to advise in the writers’ room and on set; it cast a number of HBCU students and alumni as extras; and Kennedi Reece, a recent Howard graduate, plays Hazel.

Andreya Davis, a soon-to-be three-time Howard alumna and fan of the show, described it as “nostalgia mixed with real time.”

The show reflects the diversity of students at HBCUs, Davis said, and “the conversations, the wardrobe, everything was realistic.”

“I was very proud of how HBCUs were represented and how the stories were uniquely told,” said Davis, who also works in Howard’s communications department. “I think people who are not connected to minority-serving institutions or HBCUs just don’t understand how much diversity exists within those institutions … Black people and people who attend HBCUs are not a monolith.”

Travis C. Smith, a professor of higher education at Alabama State University, said he thinks the reboot will expose more students to HBCUs—just like the original show did for him—and lead to further enrollment increases.

“A lot of students will look at A Different World, look at Hillman, look at the characters and say, ‘OK, I guess that’s somewhere I want to be,’” Smith said. HBCU culture is “the selling point for us. The academic excellence is amazing, but it’s more than that. It’s almost mystical, the culture and how you’re surrounded by Black excellence.”

Black History Month doesn’t inspire over-the-top displays, because that’s the norm at HBCUs, Smith said. HBCUs put Black students, many of whom were marginalized growing up, at the center of attention for the first time in their lives, he added.

“We’re not centering whiteness. We’re centering you and your identity development,” Smith said. “When you have the ability to show up and just be, you’re not worried about ‘Are people gonna understand my work? Are they gonna understand my language?’”

HBCUs teach students to love themselves and their history, that “our mere existence is enough,” Smith said. “I think that’s the beauty of what they’re doing with A Different World.”
