The Philadelphia 76ers opened their 2026-27 NBA season with a 106-100 victory over the defending champion New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden. The result immediately raised expectations for a Philadelphia roster featuring Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, Jaylen Brown, and LeBron James.
Carmelo Anthony believes the 76ers could become a serious threat in the Eastern Conference if their star players develop chemistry early. Speaking on the “7PM in Brooklyn” podcast, the former Knicks star suggested that the rest of the conference could face significant problems if Philadelphia finds its rhythm by November.
Anthony also delivered a clear message about leadership, identifying Maxey as the team’s central figure despite the arrival of established superstars. His assessment puts the spotlight on a team whose talent is undeniable but whose ability to work together will determine how far it can go.
Anthony believes Philadelphia could threaten the entire East
Anthony’s reaction followed Philadelphia’s comeback victory over New York on Oct. 20. The 76ers erased a double-digit deficit and outscored the Knicks 29-18 in the third quarter, turning a difficult opening-night situation into an important road win.
The former NBA scoring champion believes Philadelphia already has the shooting and individual talent needed to compete with the conference’s strongest teams. He highlighted the team’s collection of experienced players and scorers rather than suggesting it needs another major addition.
Anthony’s central argument was that chemistry could determine the team’s ceiling. If the stars learn to play together quickly, Philadelphia could become a difficult matchup for any opponent, although one victory cannot establish its standing among the league’s championship contenders.
Maxey receives Anthony’s endorsement as the team leader
Despite the attention surrounding James, Embiid and Brown, Anthony made his position on Philadelphia’s leadership clear. He identified Maxey as the team’s primary figure, emphasizing the guard’s importance to its offensive identity and long-term success.
Maxey backed up that endorsement against New York, scoring 28 points and adding 5 assists. His ability to create shots, attack the basket, and stretch defenses makes him a natural focal point for a team featuring several players who also need offensive touches.
Anthony’s comments also reflect the importance of defining roles on a star-heavy roster. Maxey can lead the offense without requiring every possession to run through him, while his teammates can contribute through scoring, playmaking, and defensive responsibilities.
James brings championship experience to a new chapter
James’ arrival gives Philadelphia another experienced playmaker with a history of adapting his game around other stars. The four-time NBA champion is entering his 24th season, bringing extensive postseason experience to a group hoping to make a deep playoff run.
Anthony suggested that James could contribute without carrying Philadelphia’s entire offense. He described how the veteran could give Maxey greater responsibility while using his own experience and creativity to make the team’s attack more effective.
The challenge will be balancing those responsibilities over a full season. James will turn 42 in December, and Philadelphia must manage his workload while ensuring the offense remains effective when he is resting or unavailable.
Brown adds another scoring option to the lineup
Brown’s arrival gives Philadelphia a proven scorer who can contribute without dominating every possession. He scored 19 points, grabbed 8 rebounds, and recorded 6 assists against New York, providing a balanced performance in his first game with the 76ers.
His presence could help Maxey by creating additional space on the perimeter and giving defenses another player to account for. Brown can attack mismatches, score off the dribble, and defend multiple positions, making him valuable beyond his scoring totals.
However, integrating another high-usage player requires adjustments. Brown, Maxey, James, and Embiid must find a sustainable balance between individual opportunities and team movement, particularly against opponents capable of disrupting Philadelphia’s preferred offensive sets.
Embiid’s condition could determine Philadelphia’s ceiling
Embiid remains central to the 76ers’ championship ambitions because of his scoring, rebounding, and interior defense. Anthony expressed optimism about the center’s physical condition, suggesting that a healthy Embiid could make Philadelphia significantly more dangerous.
The big man contributed 13 points against the Knicks as Philadelphia secured its first victory. His impact was not limited to scoring, as his presence in the paint influenced New York’s offensive decisions and helped shape the matchup.
Maintaining that level of availability will be essential. Embiid has dealt with injuries in previous seasons, and the 76ers need him to be consistently available if they hope to challenge elite Eastern Conference teams over an 82-game schedule and the playoffs.
Philadelphia’s supporting cast gives the stars more flexibility
Anthony also pointed to Philadelphia’s shooting options, including Kentavious Caldwell-Pope and Anfernee Simons. Both can provide perimeter scoring, allowing the team’s primary creators to attack defenses without facing constant double-teams or crowded driving lanes.
Caldwell-Pope brings experience as a perimeter defender and a complementary shooter, while Simons offers a different offensive dimension through his ability to create shots. Their contributions could prove especially valuable when opponents focus their defensive attention on Maxey, James or Embiid.
Second-year guard V.J. Edgecombe adds another athletic option to the rotation. His continued development could strengthen Philadelphia’s depth after he earned NBA All-Rookie First Team honors in 2025–26, giving the team an established young contributor alongside its veteran stars.
The Knicks still have plenty of reasons for confidence
Philadelphia’s opening-night victory was particularly notable because it came against the reigning NBA champions. New York had the opportunity to celebrate its title in front of its home crowd, but the 76ers spoiled the occasion with a strong second-half performance.
Jalen Brunson led the Knicks with 21 points, but he struggled to find a consistent shooting rhythm, finishing 6-for-19 from the field. New York also committed 14 turnovers, giving Philadelphia additional opportunities to control the game.
Still, the result does not erase New York’s championship credentials. The Knicks remain a formidable opponent, and the opening-night loss serves as an early reminder that maintaining their position will require consistent execution in a conference featuring several ambitious challengers.
Chemistry will determine whether Anthony’s prediction comes true
Anthony’s optimism comes with an important condition: Philadelphia must develop chemistry quickly. The roster features several accomplished players, but talent alone cannot guarantee success when offensive responsibilities, defensive assignments,s and playing time must be shared.
The coming weeks will show whether the 76ers can establish consistent habits against different styles of opposition. Their ability to defend without fouling, move the ball effectively and close out tight games will offer more meaningful evidence than a single victory.
If the group finds that balance early, Anthony believes the Eastern Conference could have a serious contender on its hands. For now, Philadelphia has delivered an encouraging opening statement, but its championship ambitions will depend on sustaining that performance throughout the season.
Fun fact: Carmelo Anthony finished his NBA career with 28,289 regular-season points, ranking among the league’s all-time leading scorers. He played for the New York Knicks from 2011 to 2017 and remains closely associated with the franchise.
