DESPITE flying under the mainstream radar, pioneering group Gerhana Ska Cinta has quietly achieved a remarkable milestone: 27 years in the music industry.
Championing a vibrant blend of ska, rocksteady and reggae, the eight-piece band consists of guitarist and vocalist Edy J, vocalist Widy, drummer Bakri, keyboardist Fairuz, bassist Skaloot, tenor saxophonist Farin, alto saxophonist Nadzmi and trumpeter Weed.
Widy expressed deep gratitude for the band's staying power, noting that their shared passion has held them together even as they juggled between music and full-time jobs.
"We are still very active in the industry. We continue to receive plenty of invitations, including gigs in Singapore.
"Over these 27 years, whenever show offers come, we gather to rehearse despite our busy work schedules.
"These gigs provide a wonderful opportunity to reunite. Over time, we've grown closer. Having built a strong chemistry over nearly three decades, we know each other inside out.
"We all truly love music. We enjoy it and respect the craft, which is why we've stayed together. Without that genuine love for music, we may have only lasted three or four years."
The band's perseverance was celebrated at a press conference during the 'Tabik Kuasa Tiga' event at Odeon KL, where they premiered music videos for 'Ali Baba Ska' and 'Rasa Sayang'.
On their airplay success in countries like the United States, Spain, and Mexico, Edy J said foreign audiences view niche genres differently.
"The dynamic abroad is quite different as ska enjoys wider acceptance. International audiences deeply appreciate our musical journey because we blend traditional Nusantara elements with a distinctly Malaysian style.
"The reception to our songs overseas has been remarkably positive, partly due to cultural differences. Here at home, while broadcasting platforms exist, the support for niche genres is somewhat lacking."
He says digital platforms have proven vital in bridging that gap globally.
