SCORES OF residents of Kumasi, the Ashanti regional capital, have expressed concern over the increasing rate of power cuts in the city.
The irate residents, especially business owners, have complained bitterly that the frequent power cuts in the city is rapidly making life unbearable for them.
They said they could not plan their lives anymore as power supply are cut at will without prior notice, lamenting that they are in difficult times due to the lack of constant power.
According to them, if the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), which is in charge of power supply, have a major challenge, then the utility company should inform the people.
They said from what they have been experiencing lately, clearly the ECG is facing a major challenge, stressing that they expect the utility company to come out with a timetable to help them plan their lives.
Most of the people who spoke on television and radio stations in the city, notably Obaapa TV, said they believe that power cuts timetable, also known as ‘dumsor’ timetable, is the solution now.
“We cannot plan our lives because power supply can come and go for about 15 times in a day. This is an unpleasant experience, and it’s making living in Kumasi nowadays very difficult.
“The power cuts are not only affecting our businesses, it’s also affecting the education of our children as they cannot study at home in the evening,” Maame Konadu, a Kumasi resident, said on radio.
Other frustrated residents also said they feared that the rate at which the power is cut and restored in the city could lead to fire outbreaks in some homes, urging the ECG to act responsibly.
Some of the people also claimed that criminals were taking advantage of the power cuts, especially in the night, to attack homes to rob unsuspecting residents.
“At least if they introduce the dumsor timetable, we can use it to plan our lives. That’s far better than frequent power cuts without prior notice to the people,” Papa Kumi, a resident, added.
