Alexis Tsipras, leader of ELLAS, welcomed in a social media post the victory of center-left Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva over far-right Flávio Bolsonaro in Brazil’s elections.
“Lula’s victory over Bolsonaro is a great victory of democracy over authoritarianism, of hope over fear, of social justice over the politics of hatred and inequality,” Tsipras wrote, adding:
“At a time when the far right is on the rise, Lula’s struggle has proven to us that this negative trend can be prevented when the Left defends democracy, tackles inequality and responds to the needs of society. When it puts social protection and the fight against poverty into practice.
Lula’s victory gives strength to those fighting for a world of peace, cooperation and respect for international law. For all peoples who decide their future as sovereign nations, without the guardianship of the powerful.”
