The Governorship candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Akwa Ibom State, Michael Enyong, has unveiled his campaign agenda, promising an Industrialisation scheme that will transform the state’s economy if elected governor in 2027.
Enyong, popularly known as Babantan, made the promises while addressing journalists in Uyo, the state capital.
The former two-term member of the House of Representatives, who represented Uyo Federal Constituency, said his administration would introduce a blueprint to position Akwa Ibom as an industrial economy and move it from consumption to production.
He also pledged to work with the NDC’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, if elected, towards achieving the proposed economic transformation.
Under the ” Babantan Prosperity Formula,” Enyong promised to empower five persons in each of the state’s 329 wards to become millionaires monthly, a proposal he said would produce approximately 2,000 millionaires every month. He further pledged to lift thousands of residents out of poverty, address hunger and revitalise the state’s economy.
On industrial development, the NDC governorship candidate outlined plans to establish manufacturing firms based on the state’s natural resources.
He promised to establish a glass manufacturing company in Mbo Local Government Area within six months, citing its deposits of silica sand, and a kaolin processing plant in Ibiono Ibom.
He also proposed an Ibom Cement factory between Ikono and Ini Local Government Areas, based on the area’s limestone deposits.
Enyong further promised to establish an Ibom Salt factory in the state’s coastal area to stimulate development in oil-producing communities.
On technology, he pledged to develop the Ibom Science Park into a platform for young people to acquire expertise in robotics, artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies.
He also promised to revive the Ibaka Deep Seaport project, saying his administration will work towards making it a reality.
The governorship candidate expressed confidence that he could begin turning the state around within his first 90 days in office, citing his experience as a federal legislator.
He also pledged to lead the NDC and its candidates to victory in the 2027 elections.
Responding, the NUJ State Chairman said the Union remained apolitical and provided a platform for political parties and their candidates to present their programmes, policy blueprints and aspirations.
He explained that the engagement was intended to help journalists and the electorate better understand the candidates’ proposals and make informed choices at the polls.
