Across travel, individuals are building businesses that once required a small company to run. They advise clients, manage properties, guide tours and set hotel prices, often under their own names and with their own customers. I counted roughly twenty versions of this across the industry, and the list is growing as the technology and services behind them become cheaper and more capable.
A travel advisor can run a million-dollar book of clients from a home office. A guide in Delhi reports nearly 2,000 tours over his career, with 259 reviews on ToursByLocals. Co-hosts manage 20 or more short-term-rental properties while software handles guest messages, pricing and cleaner dispatch. Fractional revenue managers set nightly rates for a dozen independent hotels remotely.
Independent advisors, guides and small operators have always been part of travel. What has changed is how much business one person can manage and how far the pattern has spread.
