Harry Kane won the 2026 Ballon d’Or, finishing ahead of Real Madrid’s Kylian Mbappé in second and FC Barcelona’s Lamine Yamal in third. While most individuals congratulated Kane’s win (Mbappé included), Yamal’s uncle Abdul wasn’t too happy with the Bayern Munich striker winning it.
“The truth is it’s really sad, I feel really bad,” Abdul said (via El Larguero as captured by X account @iMiaSanMia). “My nephew was amazing, he was the best player in the world, everyone knows it. If you like football, you go to watch Lamine, not Harry Kane. Since Lamine is young, they always say he has time, he’s 19, and that’s why they’re not giving him the award. Harry, with about three days of football left, they’re saying, ‘come on, we’ll give him the award’ — Lamine will win more than one, but the sadness will pass in three days. In a few days he will be fine.” Yamal won the Kopa trophy for a third successive year.
Catalonia might be saltier than the Dead Sea right now. Lamine is undeniably a talented footballer, but if Abdul thinks Yamal should win it with a grand total of 36 G/A less than Kane, near-nonexistent contribution to Spain’s World Cup win, and significantly less impact on the teams he has played in, then I’ll have to agree to disagree.
