Children help prevent 6,821 cigarette butts from reaching sea at Ecuador beach

Cigarette butts are often overlooked when people think about pollution, particularly because of their small size. However, their environmental impact can extend far beyond the places where they are discarded.

They contain cellulose acetate, a form of plastic that does not readily biodegrade, and can retain toxic substances, including nicotine and other heavy metals. As reported by Phyorg News approximately, 4.5 trillion cigarette butts are discarded yearly, making it the most common kind of litter on beaches in the last few years.A study published in the Ocean & Coastal Management journal in 2026, ascertained that in Ayangue, a coastal community in Ecuador, children aged 7 to 12 participated in a citizen science initiative.

The findings further revealed that over 2 years the project helped prevent 6,821 cigarette butts from reaching the ocean, while the number of cigarette butts collected directly from the sand during monitoring activities fell by 53.2% between 2023 and 2024.

Children’s involvement in the initiative

The initiative, known as Monitoring of Cigarette Butts Ayangue Limpio (MCBAL), was developed through collaboration involving the Amiguitos del Océano Foundation and academic and environmental organisations.

It worked with children from the local Ecoclub Ayangue Limpio, encouraging them to participate in understanding and addressing a problem affecting their own surroundings.

Rather than relying on occasional clean-up activities alone, the initiative introduced a systematic approach to monitoring the beach. The children and project organisers conducted monthly monitoring campaigns during low tide, following standardised procedures across a fixed sampling area of 1,500 square metres.

This made it possible to compare the amount of cigarette waste collected over time and assess whether the interventions were making a difference.

The small changes that helped reduce cigarette waste

The decline in cigarette butts found on the sand was associated with a combination of practical measures, awareness campaigns and community participation. One of these measures involved installing cigarette butt collectors made from reused PVC material at strategic points along the Ayangue boardwalk.

During 18 months of operation, these collectors gathered 1,198 cigarette butts, helping keep them from entering the surrounding marine environment.Another initiative encouraged residents and visitors to participate more actively in keeping the beach clean. Through an activity called the Exchange Point, people could exchange specific types of waste collected from the beach for access to sports equipment, including snorkels and balls.

Across eight events, this initiative resulted in the collection of 941 cigarette butts alongside 97.9 kilograms of other waste.

Why does children’s participation matter?

What makes the initiative particularly interesting is that its impact was not limited to the waste collected. According to the study, 85.7% of participating children shared the knowledge they gained with their families and social circles. Some also encouraged their parents to collect cigarette butts in their workplaces, allowing the message to reach people who were not directly involved in the project.

The initiative also connected children's environmental work with local decision-making.

The community council, known as the Cabildo, supported their proposals with logistical assistance and materials, while publicising the Ecoclub's achievements through official channels.

This involvement gave children an opportunity to contribute to discussions about the place where they live, rather than being treated simply as recipients of environmental education.

Their participation showed how learning about pollution can become more meaningful when children are also given the opportunity to observe a problem, collect evidence and take part in developing solutions. This project in Ecuador does not suggest that children's efforts alone can solve the larger problem of marine pollution. Cigarette waste remains an environmental concern that requires responsible disposal, public awareness and sustained action from individuals, businesses and local authorities.

However, the experience in Ayangue demonstrates how local initiatives can bring these efforts together. For a small coastal community, the results are a striking reminder of how protecting the ocean does not always begin with a sweeping intervention, but by educating the young generation about the world around them and also encouraging them to help bring about change.
