The Netherlands now has an official answer to a question that used to rely on guesswork: how much crypto do Dutch households actually own?
According to De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB), the answer is €3.2 billion, at least for crypto held through domestic providers at the end of June 2026.
The figure comes from the central bank’s first comprehensive statistics on direct crypto-asset holdings in the country, published on October 27, 2026.
What the numbers show
The headline number covers households only. Businesses and other sectors held another €200 million, which brings the total held through Dutch crypto-asset service providers (CASPs) to €3.4 billion.
CASPs are the regulated companies that buy, sell and hold crypto on customers’ behalf. Notable Dutch CASPs include Bitvavo, Coinmerce and Blox.
Bitcoin dominates the household pile. DNB counted €1.5 billion in Bitcoin, close to half of the household total.
Ethereum came in at €0.3 billion. Together, the two largest assets account for €1.8 billion, leaving the remainder spread across other tokens.
Most of what households own falls into the category of unbacked crypto. These are assets with no reserve, issuer promise or underlying collateral holding up their value.
Stablecoins, the dollar- or euro-pegged tokens designed to avoid price swings, made up less than 1% of household holdings.
A small slice of the portfolio
For perspective, DNB compared the crypto figure with household investments in traditional securities: shares, bonds and investment funds. Those totaled €234.2 billion.
Against that backdrop, crypto represents roughly 1.4% of what Dutch households hold in conventional securities. Put differently, for every €100 sitting in stocks, bonds and funds, about €1.40 sits in crypto at domestic providers.
The big caveat: what DNB can’t see
The statistics only capture assets held through licensed Dutch CASPs. Several categories fall outside that boundary.
Holdings on foreign platforms are excluded. So is self-custodied crypto, meaning coins people keep in their own wallets rather than with an exchange.
Indirect exposure to crypto markets is also left out of this count. DNB has monitored that type of exposure separately in past reports.
The practical result is that €3.2 billion should be read as a floor, not a ceiling. It is the portion of Dutch household crypto that passes through domestic, regulated channels.
Why a first snapshot matters
Until now, crypto ownership in the Netherlands was something officials could estimate or survey, but not tally directly through regulated providers. This release marks the first official snapshot of digital asset investments made by Dutch consumers and institutions through regulated entities.
What this means
For regulators, the data provides a concrete reference point. The concentration in Bitcoin and Ethereum shows where most household exposure sits, which in turn shows where a sharp price move would be felt most.
With Bitcoin alone representing €1.5 billion, a significant drawdown in that single asset would account for most of any hit to Dutch household crypto wealth held domestically.
For domestic platforms such as Bitvavo, Coinmerce and Blox, the figures offer a rare look at the size of the regulated local market they operate in. At €3.4 billion across all sectors, it is now a defined pool rather than a loose estimate.
The near-absence of stablecoins is also worth noting. Households held less than 1% of their crypto in these tokens, suggesting that, at least through domestic providers, stablecoins are not functioning as a savings or payments tool for Dutch retail users.
For investors, the key signal is proportion. A 1.4% allocation relative to traditional securities frames crypto as a modest, high-volatility slice of household portfolios rather than a core holding.
