Esiama Senior High Technical School (SECTECH) in the Ellembelle District of the Western Region is facing serious infrastructure challenges as 641 female students compete for just 240 beds in the school’s girls dormitory.
This, according to the school, has compelled most of the female students to carry their mattresses into regular classrooms and the school’s sole assembly hall every night to sleep.
The accommodation crisis is compounded by a severe shortage of classroom furniture, with fewer than 700 pieces available for a student population of 1,642.
Headteacher of the school, Francis Emmisah, noted that the challenges have left students struggling to find seats in classrooms, the dining hall and during evening preparations.
“As of late 2026, the school has about 700 desks to accommodate a student population of 1,642,” he noted.
He indicated that due to the furniture deficit, students are forced to share single desks, sit on plastic chairs and study using plastic crates.
It was revealed that overcrowded classrooms make the learning environment uncomfortable and significantly hinder the students’ writing and academic engagement.
“Our major challenge has been furniture and dormitory space for our female students. As I speak, the total furniture in the school is less than 700, accommodating 1,642 students.
“We have 641 girls, but the dormitory can accommodate only 240,” Mr. Emmisah disclosed.
He, however, mentioned that despite the difficult conditions, the school recorded a pass rate of 73.4 per cent in the previous year’s West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
He said, “This demonstrates the school’s efforts to sustain academic performance amid inadequate facilities.”
He, therefore, appealed for urgent government intervention to address the school’s challenges.
