Anthony Edwards delivered one of the most impressive performances of the young NBA season Monday night, but it wasn't enough to keep the Minnesota Timberwolves undefeated.
Despite a spectacular 47-point performance from their superstar guard, the Timberwolves suffered their first loss of the season, falling 127-125 to the Cleveland Cavaliers in an overtime thriller at Rocket Arena.
The matchup featured dramatic momentum swings, clutch baskets and a remarkable comeback from Cleveland.
Minnesota entered the contest with a perfect 3-0 record and appeared headed toward another victory after building a 15-point lead during the first half.
Edwards was nearly unstoppable offensively, scoring 20 points before halftime and consistently challenging Cleveland's defense.
However, the Cavaliers refused to go away.
Trailing 60-50 at halftime, Cleveland mounted a second-half comeback, using a 12-0 run during the third quarter to erase Minnesota's advantage and turn the contest into a back-and-forth battle.
Donovan Mitchell led the Cavaliers with 26 points, five rebounds and seven assists, while James Harden contributed 22 points and nine assists.
With the game hanging in the balance late in regulation, Harden delivered a crucial basket to tie the score at 113. Cleveland's Peyton Watson also made a critical defensive play, blocking an Edwards attempt to help force overtime.
The extra period provided even more drama.
Edwards continued attacking, but Mitchell delivered when Cleveland needed him most, connecting on a go-ahead midrange jumper with just over a minute remaining.
The Cavaliers ultimately held on for the two-point victory, improving to 2-1 while dropping Minnesota to 3-1.
Edwards finished with 47 points on 19-of-34 shooting, adding four rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocks.
It marked his second 40-point performance through Minnesota's first four games, further highlighting his explosive start to the season.
Still, the individual brilliance wasn't enough to overcome Cleveland's late-game execution.
For Cleveland, the victory was a much-needed response after surrendering a 29-point lead against Philadelphia in its season opener. This time, the Cavaliers found a way to finish, overcoming a double-digit deficit and delivering in the biggest moments.
For Minnesota, the loss was especially frustrating considering Edwards' remarkable performance. Despite pouring in 47 points, the Timberwolves couldn't make enough plays down the stretch to preserve their undefeated record.
...
While Minnesota's perfect start has come to an end, Edwards continues to prove why he's among the NBA's most dangerous scorers. However, Monday's loss showed that even his best performances won't always be enough.
If the Timberwolves hope to establish themselves as legitimate contenders in the Western Conference, they'll need to find ways to close out games when their superstar has already done everything possible to put them in position to win.
