“The goal is to reduce segregation,” Elnaz Alizadeh (S), chairwoman of Uppsalahem, tells Sveriges Radio Ekot.
There are 40 apartments in a pilot project in Uppsala, and a similar model is also in place in Stockholm. Applicants must earn less than 24,000 kronor per month before tax.
“The goal, broadly speaking, is to break down segregation and create a mixed city. People should live side by side, whether they have high or low incomes,” says Alizadeh (S).
The Moderates in Stockholm and Uppsala are critical of the income ceiling.
“A better selection of affordable, good apartments, building where people want to live and making efforts to bring in more jobs. That’s the model I believe in,” says Robin Kronvall (M), who sits on the board of Uppsalahem.
