BNP Acting Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has criticised the inspector general of police (IGP) for remarks he described as an attempt to gain cheap credit, warning that such statements could harm the country and embarrass the government rather than reassure it.
He said the police force had many honest and capable officers who could help eliminate crime from society if allowed to perform their duties impartially.
Rizvi made the remarks today (27 October) at the inauguration of a free medical camp organised to mark the 48th founding anniversary of Jubo Dal outside the BNP's central office in Nayapaltan, Dhaka.
Speaking about the law and order situation and the police chief's recent comments, Rizvi said the head of the police force appeared to be making statements in support of the government.
"Instead of reassuring the government, such remarks create a situation in which it has reason to feel apprehensive," he said.
Rizvi warned that comments made by officials in positions of responsibility to gain cheap credit or public acclaim could damage the country and place the government in an embarrassing position.
Referring to various social and development initiatives outlined by BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman, Rizvi said the party's primary objective was to equip young people with the skills to work independently and involve them in the country's production and development.
He said young people should be made key partners in rebuilding the nation rather than being allowed to become involved in disorder.
Praising Jubo Dal's anniversary programmes, Rizvi expressed hope that the organisation's leaders and activists would set a new example through blood donation, humanitarian services, tree planting and initiatives aimed at boosting productivity
