Local BNP, Jubo Dal and Chhatra Dal leaders and activists have been accused of attacking the Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) office in the capital's Purana Paltan, allegedly branding the party and its allies as Awami League supporters.
The incident triggered tension and a clash last night (26 October), with Chhatra Union and Jubo Union leaders claiming that two Jubo Union members were injured and taken away by police.
However, Paltan Police Station Officer-in-Charge Ariful Alam denied that an attack or injuries had occurred. He said tension prevailed at the scene and police were present.
Around 10:30pm, Bangladesh Chhatra Union Central President Mahir Shahriar said their office had come under attack. He said they believed the attackers were local BNP activists and alleged that members of Paltan thana BNP and its affiliated organisations might also have been involved.
Mahir alleged that the attackers were trying to portray them as Awami League supporters. He said he, other central leaders of Chhatra Union, and members of affiliated and sister organisations were inside the office at the time.
At 11:10pm, CPB General Secretary Abdullah Al Kafi said he was heading to the office after learning about the incident.
"A mob party comes to a party office and attacks it. That is all I know so far," he said.
Earlier on Monday, police detained former Bangladesh Chhatra Union president Dipak Shil during a protest in Dhanmondi-27 against the obstruction of female Baul singers from performing in Sunamganj.
Cultural activists gathered in front of Meena Bazar around 4pm for a human chain, but police prevented them from proceeding with the programme. Participants said Dipak was detained at the scene.
He was released around 9pm. After his release, Chhatra Union and Jubo Union activists brought out a celebratory procession in Purana Paltan.
They alleged that Jatiyatabadi Swechchhasebak Dal activists attacked a gathering following the procession and that the confrontation later spread to the CPB office.
The CPB office occupies the sixth and seventh floors of Muktibhaban in Purana Paltan, while the offices of Chhatra Union and Jubo Union are on the eighth floor.
Around 10:30pm, Chhatra Union leaders said they were inside their office when the incident occurred. They alleged that two Jubo Union members were injured in the clash and taken away by police.
