David Lynch Praises Florian Wirtz as Liverpool Star Shows Signs of Finding His Form
Florian Wirtz is beginning to show encouraging signs of progress at Liverpool, with journalist David Lynch praising the German’s work rate, attacking intent and growing influence during the club’s recent run of results.
Speaking to Dave Davis on Anfield Index’s Media Matters podcast, Lynch reflected on Wirtz’s performance against Brighton, highlighting the midfielder’s contribution across both sides of the game. While questions remain over his consistency, the latest display offered further evidence that he is starting to make a more meaningful impact at Anfield.
Wirtz was involved in a Liverpool performance that brought another victory, with his willingness to move the ball quickly, attempt ambitious passes and compete physically attracting particular praise from Davis. The presenter also highlighted his two chances created and three tackles, which put him joint-top for tackles in the match.
For Lynch, the most important development is that Wirtz’s technical quality is increasingly being matched by effective contributions and a determination to influence games.
David Lynch Highlights Wirtz’s All-Round Liverpool Performance
Davis was particularly impressed by Wirtz’s display against Brighton, pointing to the midfielder’s positive approach from the opening stages and his willingness to get involved in physical contests.
The presenter also noted that Wirtz had another goal contribution, although the deflection involved meant it was not reflected in the expected goals contribution statistics. Davis felt the overall performance deserved recognition, regardless of how the numbers were recorded.
Lynch agreed with the assessment, praising the German’s commitment and the work rate that has remained evident even during more difficult spells.
“Yeah, really, really dogged, and I like that side of his game,” Lynch explained.
He added that Wirtz’s effort has been a consistent feature of his performances, including during periods when his attacking play was not coming together as he would have wanted.
That work rate becomes particularly valuable when the creative elements of his game begin to click. Liverpool need Wirtz to provide attacking quality, but his willingness to compete, press and contribute defensively gives him another way to influence matches.
The Brighton performance offered a combination of those qualities, with Wirtz showing energy away from the ball while continuing to look for opportunities to make things happen in possession.
Attacking Intent Is Starting to Produce Results
A central theme of Lynch’s assessment was the importance of Wirtz maintaining his positive approach in attacking areas.
Liverpool signed the German because of his technical ability, creativity and capacity to unlock opposition defences. Delivering those qualities consistently in the Premier League remains an important part of his development, and Lynch believes there are encouraging signs that his performances are moving in the right direction.
He explained: “It looks even better when the stuff is starting to come off for him on the other side of the ball.”
Lynch also stressed that the next step is to sustain that attacking influence across successive appearances. Wirtz needs to keep making forward passes, taking opportunities to create chances and demonstrating the positive intention that can help Liverpool break down opponents.
“Got to keep it going. Got to keep getting those goal contributions, got to keep showing positive intention in the final third,” Lynch said.
Those comments reflect the balance of Lynch’s assessment. Wirtz has shown that he is prepared to work hard for the team, and the focus now is on ensuring that his technical ability regularly translates into decisive moments.
The midfielder’s contribution against Brighton was encouraging in that respect. Even with debate over whether the deflected effort should count as a goal contribution, his overall involvement suggested a player becoming increasingly comfortable taking responsibility.

Liverpool Need Wirtz to Build Consistency
Lynch’s praise comes with a clear expectation that Wirtz must continue improving. A handful of encouraging performances can provide momentum, but Liverpool need their high-profile signing to make this level of involvement a regular feature of his game.
The journalist pointed to the German’s recent run, noting that he had scored during the previous four-game spell. He acknowledged that people could debate the classification of the latest contribution, but remained positive about the wider trend.
“Again, these last four games, he’s got a goal,” Lynch said.
The significance lies in the direction of travel. Wirtz is showing greater attacking intent while continuing to work hard when Liverpool are without possession. If those elements become consistent, he can offer the team a more reliable creative threat.
Lynch’s comments also fit into the broader improvement he sees across Liverpool’s performances. The team has begun to build momentum, and players who had struggled to reach their best level are starting to make stronger contributions. For Wirtz, that collective progress creates an opportunity to establish himself as an increasingly influential figure.
There is still work to do, and Lynch was clear that the German must keep producing positive performances rather than assuming the recent improvement will continue automatically.
For now, though, the signs are encouraging. Wirtz’s performance against Brighton combined determination, defensive effort and attacking ambition, giving Liverpool another reason to believe he can deliver more consistently.
As Lynch’s assessment made clear, the priority is straightforward: keep working, keep trying things in the final third and keep turning promising performances into tangible contributions. If Wirtz can maintain that approach, his recent progress could become an important part of Liverpool’s continued improvement.
