Mikel Arteta Demands Full Focus as Arsenal Face Fleetwood in Carabao Cup
Arsenal should win at Fleetwood. Everyone knows that. Fleetwood are 18th in League Two, Arsenal are operating at a completely different level, and the gap in quality is obvious. That is precisely why Mikel Arteta is talking about complacency.
The Arsenal manager has made the message clear before Tuesday night’s Carabao Cup fourth-round tie at Highbury Stadium. Rotation is expected, the schedule is busy, and a trip to Anfield follows this weekend. None of that matters if standards drop. Arteta wants a professional job, no excuses, no drift.
Arteta Sets Simple Arsenal Message
His instruction is direct. “Show them the Arsenal shirt and what we represent and that’s it,” Arteta said. “We need to go there and win the game. That’s it. It’s very simple.
“Our reputation, our pride, everything is in play. So every time you play a football match and especially against a team in a different division, respect the game, respect every opponent because they deserve that.
“Then try to win and try to play a bit better than them.”
That is the right tone. Cup ties like this can become awkward very quickly if the bigger side treats it like an obligation rather than a contest.

Fleetwood Cup Tie Carries Familiar Risk
Arteta knows exactly how these nights can unravel. He was part of the Arsenal squad in 2012 when Bradford dumped the club out on penalties in one of the competition’s most embarrassing shocks. That memory still matters because the pattern never changes. Lower-league teams raise intensity, the bigger team hesitates, and suddenly the match is level.
Arteta put it plainly: “We all had one at some stage and we know the risk,” Arteta said.
“In football, things can get very equal the moment you are able to match certain things.
“That’s when our basics and habits have to be through the roof to be able to win the game.”
Carabao Cup Demands Arsenal Discipline
So this is not about style points. It is about doing the basics properly. Win duels, keep shape, move the ball well, and avoid giving Fleetwood any belief. Arsenal have more than enough to get through, but only if they approach the Carabao Cup tie with the seriousness Arteta is demanding.
