A Satkhira court yesterday sentenced Abdur Rouf Sardar to death and fined him Tk 50,000 for killing his wife and infant daughter over dowry demands and family disputes.
Judge Md Zakaria Hossain of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal delivered the verdict, said Public Prosecutor Sheikh Alamgir Ashraf.
According to the case statement, Sabina Islam, 26, had married Rouf about three and a half years before the incident. The couple had a daughter, Ayesha Siddika.
Rouf allegedly demanded Tk 50,000 for his mother’s medical treatment and money to buy a motorcycle. Following disputes over the demands, Sabina returned to her parents’ house with their daughter.
Rouf continued visiting his in-laws’ house. On the night of September 7, 2015, he visited again and had an argument with Sabina.
Around midnight, Sabina’s mother, Jahanara Khatun, went to an adjoining room and found her daughter and granddaughter dead. Rouf had fled by then.
Rouf went into hiding after securing bail on July 30, 2020, and remains absconding.
