National Citizen Party (NCP) Convener Nahid Islam today accused the BNP of trying to monopolise power whenever it was in office and failing to cooperate in a peaceful transfer of power.
He made the remarks at a press conference at a restaurant in Munshiganj town around 12:00pm, ahead of the NCP’s regional coordination meetings to review organisational progress across the country and plan for local and national elections.
Nahid said the caretaker government system had a long history, with the demand emerging during the mass uprising of the 1990s and being accepted by all political parties involved in the movement.
He said the BNP held a one-sided election in 1996 but failed to sustain its rule and was eventually forced to step down amid a movement.
“In 2006 as well, BNP played dramas regarding the caretaker government. They politicised the judiciary, trying to install their own judge as the head of the caretaker government. In the same manner as the Awami League, the BNP has always tried to monopolise power. However, while the Awami League succeeded, the BNP did not,” he said.
Nahid alleged that the BNP was again delaying the process over the caretaker government system and conspiring to install its own people. He warned that such attempts would not be allowed to succeed.
NCP Senior Joint Member Secretary Sarjis Alam and other central and local leaders were present at the press conference.
