Police officers in South Africa and Namibia earn different salaries depending on their positions and experience, with official recruitment advertisements providing an insight into what newly recruited officers can expect to earn in the two neighbouring countries.
How much do police officers earn in South Africa?
According to the South African Police Service (SAPS), its 2026/27 entry-level police trainee recruitment advertisement offered successful recruits a stipend of R5 000 per month during training.
After successfully completing basic training, recruits could be considered for permanent appointment as constables, earning R248 175 per year.
This translates to approximately R20 681 per month before deductions.
The advertisement also states that trainees receive free training equipment, meals and accommodation during basic training, alongside medical aid benefits for the duration of the 21-month programme.
The advertised salary provides a benchmark for prospective officers, although actual earnings may vary depending on subsequent salary adjustments, experience and applicable benefits.
How much do police officers earn in Namibia?
In Namibia, the Namibian Police Force (NamPol) advertised cadet constable positions for the 2026/27 financial year, with a monthly training allowance of N$7 514.25.
According to the official recruitment advertisement, successful recruits would be appointed as cadet constables after completing basic training, with an annual salary scale ranging from N$90 171 to N$109 428 while under probation.
This translates to approximately N$7 514 to N$9 119 per month before deductions.
NamPol advertised 1 000 positions for the general public, alongside additional recruitment opportunities for National Youth Service participants and applicants with relevant tertiary qualifications.
The positions require applicants to meet the force’s citizenship, educational and other recruitment requirements.
How do the salaries compare?
The two countries’ advertised salaries provide a starting point for comparing police remuneration.
South Africa’s advertised constable salary is approximately R20 681 per month, while Namibia’s advertised cadet constable salary scale translates to approximately N$7 514 to N$9119 monthly.
The Namibian dollar is pegged at parity with the South African rand, making the nominal figures broadly comparable.
However, the figures relate to different recruitment stages and should not be interpreted as a complete comparison of all police officers’ earnings.
The advertised amounts are also gross salaries, meaning deductions and individual benefits can affect take-home pay.
Differences in living costs, allowances, experience and rank would need to be considered for a broader comparison.
