As many as 107 sugar mills have commenced sugarcane crushing for the marketing season that started on October 1, 2026, according to the Indian Sugar & Bio-Energy Manufacturers Association.
Sugar mills in Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, and Uttar Pradesh have commenced crushing operations.
The previous sugar season that ended on September 30 closed with approximately 36 lakh tonnes of carryover stocks, providing a base for meeting domestic consumption requirements. As of 25 October 2026, sugar production during the current 2026–27 season had reached approximately four lakh tonnes, compared with just about 0.6 lakh tonnes on the corresponding date last year.
The Government has extended the duty-free raw sugar import window and introduced stockholding limits. These measures, together with available carryover stocks and the commencement of fresh production, contribute to ensuring adequate sugar availability for domestic consumption during the festive period, it said.
