Walkinshaw TWG Racing was fined and lost teams’ championship points after the Gold Coast 500 finale. Chaz Mostert’s podium, earned on the road, stayed exactly where it was. If that looks like a mismatch, it is, and it is deliberate: the penalty is for a paperwork-style breach, not for anything that changed the race.
What the rule actually asks
The investigation first appeared to be about the Mostert car’s fuel hose still being attached as the car was dropped to the ground. The breach that was cited concerned something else. A note in the pre-event authorised representatives’ briefing requires teams to tell Supercars the litres of fuel transferred in each pit stop, by direct message on the Supercars Teams App, within five laps of the stop. Walkinshaw TWG was found in breach of the pit stop refuelling requirement.
The size of the fine and the number of points were not stated in the series’ own report, and Motorsport Australia had not yet published its findings when that report appeared. Treat both figures as pending.
Why a litres log matters
The note does not explain its own purpose, so this part is analysis. A running record of litres per stop is the sort of data a series needs if it wants to test a team’s fuel-to-finish claims after the fact. The same weekend supplied a live example: two Chevrolet teams explained late stops as fuel miscalculations, and anyone assessing those explanations wants transferred volumes, not just the story. Our coverage of those late stops and the Finals fallout covers that side.
It also explains why the penalty lands on the team rather than the result. Mostert finished third, his fourth straight podium at Surfers Paradise. A reporting failure does not make a car faster, so the sanction hits the budget and the teams’ table instead.
The practical damage
The points deduction dropped Walkinshaw TWG behind Tickford Racing into third in the teams’ championship ahead of the Penrite Oil Sandown 500. Mostert still goes into the Semi Final starting fourth, having qualified with a dominant Saturday win. The team also used a mid-race swap to help teammate Ryan Wood chase a Finals place, a move the regulations permit that ultimately did not pay off.
