Kohima, Oct 26: Assam Rifles organised a trophy roadshow across Kohima on Sunday to build public enthusiasm for the 10th edition of the Capt (Late) N Kengurüse, MVC Memorial Football Tournament, scheduled to be held from November 2 to 9.
The exhibition-cum-trophy parade was organised under the aegis of Spear Corps, as part of Operation Sadbhavana, in collaboration with the Nagaland Football Association (NFA). The initiative aimed to promote football among young people and encourage values of discipline, teamwork and unity.
The roadshow covered key locations in Kohima, including High School Junction, BOC Junction, Lerie Junction, Old NST Station, Tinpati Junction and Razhu Point. The display of the tournament trophy and promotional banners sought to draw public attention to the upcoming competition.
The 10th edition will feature 20 teams competing in a knockout format at Indira Gandhi Stadium in Kohima. The tournament is being organised by Spear Corps of the Indian Army and Headquarters Inspector General Assam Rifles (North), in collaboration with the NFA, with support from the Kohima District Football Association and Chümoukedima District Football Association.
The tournament carries a total prize pool of ₹8.69 lakh. The champions will receive ₹4 lakh, while the runners-up will get ₹2 lakh. The third- and fourth-placed teams will receive ₹1 lakh and ₹75,000, respectively.
The annual tournament honours Captain Neikezhakuo Kengurüse, who was posthumously awarded the Mahavir Chakra for his bravery during the 1999 Kargil War. His legacy of courage and sacrifice remains central to the memorial competition.
Through the tournament and its outreach activities, Assam Rifles and the Indian Army aim to encourage young people to take up sports while promoting discipline, sportsmanship and national service.
