LatAm and Africa Prediction Markets, Week of 26 Oct

Prediction Markets: Latin America and Africa

Brazil’s voters surprised the bettors: Lula won a fourth term after prediction markets had given him about a one-in-five chance.

Polymarket priced President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva at 18.5% at 3 pm Brasília time on Sunday 25 October, two hours before polls were due to close. He won 51.79% of valid votes, which exclude blank and spoiled ballots, against 48.21% for Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, according to the count of every polling station by the Superior Electoral Court (TSE).

Bets on Brazil’s interest rate swung in the same days, and traders now give 58% to a pause in the Selic, Brazil’s benchmark interest rate, on 4 November, up from 9% a week ago. It matters to US readers because the rate helps set what Brazilian bonds and loans pay.

This report covers 19 to 26 October across Latin America and Africa. It shows what moved, what comes next and how far to trust each price.

What Prediction Markets Say

Prediction markets are exchanges where people buy and sell contracts on future events, and a price of 60 cents means the crowd gives that outcome roughly a 60% chance. The prices below are bets, not polls, and we read them on 26 October 2026, 7:04 am ET.

• Brazil presidency (Polymarket, US$249.1 million total volume, now settled): Lula 100%. A week earlier Flávio Bolsonaro stood at 76.8% and Lula at 22.5%.
• Brazil central bank, 4 November (Polymarket, US$93,781): no change 57.8%, quarter-point (25 basis point) cut 24.5%, increase of 50 basis points or more 9.4%.
• Brazil rate cuts in 2026 (Kalshi, last trades, more than 170,000 contracts): exactly five 71%, exactly six 15%, seven or more 23%. Each line is a separate contract, and last trades need not add to 100%.
• Mexico central bank, 5 November (Polymarket, US$105,052): no change 90.5%, 25 basis point cut 8.6%.
• Colombia central bank, 30 October (Polymarket, US$59,134): no change 51.5%, 25 basis point rise 39.5%.
• Mexico third-quarter growth against a year earlier, 30 October release (Polymarket, US$69,956): 3.0% to 3.5% 33.6%, 3.5% or more 32.1%, 2.0% to 2.5% 14.0%, 2.5% to 3.0% 6.5%; other brackets not shown.
• Argentina 2027 presidency (Polymarket, US$1.1 million): President Javier Milei 46.5%, Buenos Aires Governor Axel Kicillof 29.5%, former minister Sergio Massa 14.0%.
• Venezuela’s leader on 31 December (Polymarket, US$98.9 million): Nicolás Maduro 75.8%, Delcy Rodríguez 20.5%.

Kalshi is a US exchange regulated in the United States by the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), while Polymarket is a crypto-based platform. Both publish prices that anyone can read for free.

Why we show this: prediction markets turn real-money bets into a live probability that moves within minutes of the news, which is why investors, campaigns and newsrooms in the United States now follow them closely. We show them next to polls and official results, never instead of them.

The Week’s Biggest Moves

Brazil: the bettors backed the wrong winner

Polymarket’s price for a Flávio Bolsonaro win stayed at or near 75% or higher in the week before the vote, and Lula’s stayed at or near 25% or lower. Flávio, the son of former president Jair Bolsonaro, had led the first round on 4 October with 47.03% to Lula’s 45.16%.

A late poll by CNT/MDA, a Brazilian polling firm, had him at 50.5% of valid votes to 49.5%. The TSE count instead gave Lula 64,256,232 votes to 59,826,041, a lead of 4,430,191 votes or about 3.6 points.

A price of 80% never meant certainty, because an outcome priced at 20% happens one time in five. Flávio Bolsonaro said on 25 October that he would ask to annul the result, citing the extension of voting hours in some places.

Brazil: rate-cut bets flip to a pause

Polymarket’s price for a quarter-point cut at the central bank’s 4 November meeting fell from 90.5% to 24.5% in a week, while “no change” rose from 8.6% to 57.8%. Kalshi shows the same turn: “exactly five cuts in 2026” rose from 10% on Sunday to 71%, and “seven or more” fell from 60% to 23%.

The central bank has already cut its benchmark Selic rate five times this year, by 25 bps at each of five meetings between March and September, taking it from 15.00% to 13.75%. Our reading is that “exactly five” is a bet that nothing more happens at the meetings on 4 November and 9 December.

The bank’s weekly Focus survey of economists, with answers collected to 16 October, still pointed the other way, with a median Selic of 13.25% at the end of 2026. We found no central bank statement or data release behind the repricing, so we cannot name a trigger.

Mexico: growth bets jump, rate bets harden

Polymarket traders now give 32.1% to Mexico’s third-quarter economy growing 3.5% or more from a year earlier, up from 12.2%, while the 2.5% to 3.0% bracket fell from 33.5% to 6.5%. These small brackets can swing on a few trades.

INEGI reported 1.9% annual growth for the second quarter, after seasonal adjustment, so these bets imply a sharp pickup. INEGI publishes its first third-quarter estimate on Friday 30 October, and this market has only US$69,956 in volume.

On rates, Polymarket gives 90.5% to no change at Banxico on Thursday 5 November, up from 76.5%, after the bank held at 6.50% on 24 September. Banxico is Mexico’s central bank, and we found no data release or statement behind either move this week.

Brazil’s Supreme Court: bets on Moraes leaving fade

Polymarket’s price that Justice Alexandre de Moraes leaves Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court for any reason by 31 December fell from 21.0% to 4.5%, on US$252,631 in volume. A separate market on any justice being removed by impeachment before 2027 stands at 5.0%, up from 1.5%.

We found no resignation, impeachment motion or ruling behind the drop. It came in the week of the runoff, but we cannot link the two.

Two thin markets: El Salvador’s bitcoin and a three-election combo

Polymarket’s “31 December 2026” outcome for El Salvador’s government holding at least US$1 billion in bitcoin rose from 15.5% to 48.5%. Only US$10,879 has ever traded on that outcome, and almost none of it this week, so a handful of trades can explain the move, and we found no government announcement behind it.

A Polymarket combination bet pays only if Lula wins Brazil, Gadi Eizenkot, Israel’s former army chief, is the first prime minister sworn in after Israel’s vote, and Democrats control the US Senate. It jumped from 8.7% to 46.4%, and our reading is that Lula’s win settled the first leg, leaving Israel’s vote on Tuesday 27 October and the US midterm elections on Tuesday 3 November.

Latin America

Venezuela’s market for who leads the country on 31 December was the most traded among the Latin America and Africa markets on our board, with about US$355,000 changing hands in seven days by Polymarket’s own count. Nicolás Maduro, captured by US forces in January, is priced at 75.8%, and Delcy Rodríguez, acting president since January, at 20.5%.

The market resolves to whoever officially holds the office on 31 December, and we cannot explain why bettors rate Maduro so far ahead. Our earlier report covers the push for an election date.

On Cuba, Polymarket gives 9.5% to US military action by 31 December (US$5.5 million traded on that outcome) and 13.0% to the regime falling in 2026, up from 9.5%. For Colombia, the price for a US strike by 31 December is 20.5% (US$1.2 million), and for Mexico 3.5% (US$0.8 million).

Colombia’s central bank, Banrep, decides on Friday 30 October, and Polymarket gives 51.5% to no change and 39.5% to a quarter-point rise, against 56.0% and 38.0% a week ago. The bank raised its rate by 25 bps to 12.25% on 30 September.

Argentina’s 2027 presidency is the main long-range market. Milei leads at 46.5% on Polymarket, with Kicillof second at 29.5%.

Africa

No African outcome with more than US$50,000 traded moved 10 points this week, and all are small beside Brazil’s. Nigeria’s presidency is the biggest, with US$136,293 traded in the market: President Bola Tinubu is at 68.5%, down from 72.0%, and opposition politician Peter Obi at 24.0%, before the vote on Saturday 16 January 2027.

For Sudan, 12.5% is the price of a civil-war ceasefire by 31 December, thinly traded at US$15,050. For Ethiopia, the price of Eritrea invading by 31 December rose from 10.5% to 14.5% (US$59,820), while the 31 October date fell from 9.8% to 4.3%.

For South Africa, 79.3% is the price that 2026 inflation ends above 5.0%, down from 86.0%, thinly traded at US$27,899. The statistics office Stats SA reported 4.5% for September, up from 4.4% in August.

Mali’s market on junta leader Assimi Goïta leaving office by 30 June 2027 rose from 23.0% to 29.5% (US$51,652). It is a small market, so a few trades can move it.

Decisions Ahead

• Tuesday 27 October: Israel votes, one leg of the three-election combination bet.
• Friday 30 October: Mexico’s first third-quarter growth estimate from INEGI, and Colombia’s central bank decision.
• Tuesday 3 November: US midterm elections, which decide control of the US Senate, the third part of the combination bet.
• Wednesday 4 November: Brazil’s central bank announces its decision after a two-day meeting, and South Africa holds local elections.
• Thursday 5 November: Mexico’s central bank decision.
• Wednesday 9 December: Brazil’s central bank decides again, after the November meeting.
• Saturday 16 January 2027: Nigeria’s presidential election.

What It Means for US Readers

Investors in Brazilian bonds, the Brazilian real and US-listed Brazilian shares should watch 4 November. A pause would keep the Selic at 13.75%, while bettors a week ago expected a cut.

The runoff also shows the limit of these prices, because a market that says 80% can still be wrong. For the trade side of the story, see our report Brazil Awaits US Tariff Offer After Lula Win.

What Is Not Known

We do not know why Brazil’s rate odds, the Moraes market or the Mexico growth bracket moved, because we found no official event behind them. Each could reflect a handful of traders, since most of these markets hold under US$150,000.

We have not seen Flávio Bolsonaro’s annulment request filed or any court response. We also cannot explain why Venezuela’s market prices Maduro as the likeliest leader at year end.

Frequently Asked Questions

What did prediction markets say before Brazil’s runoff?

Polymarket priced Flávio Bolsonaro near 80% and Lula at 18.5% on voting day, 25 October. Lula won with 51.79% of valid votes, so the market was wrong.

What are bettors expecting from Brazil’s central bank?

Polymarket gives 57.8% to no change on 4 November and 24.5% to a quarter-point cut. A week earlier the cut stood at 90.5%.

Which Latin America bets moved most this week?

Polymarket’s price for a Brazil rate cut on 4 November fell from 90.5% to 24.5%, and Kalshi’s “exactly five cuts” rose from 10% to 71% in a day. Mexico growth and El Salvador bitcoin bets also jumped, on small volume.

What do prediction markets say about Africa?

Polymarket gives Bola Tinubu 68.5% to win Nigeria’s presidency, Eritrea 14.5% to invade Ethiopia by 31 December and a Sudan ceasefire 12.5%. All three are small markets, so a few traders can move them.

Are prediction market prices reliable?

They are bets, not polls, and a 20% outcome happens one time in five. Thin markets can be moved by a few traders, so we label them and show them next to official data.
