Cameron, a Grade 11 pupil who participated in rowing and netball, allegedly had to log into Microsoft Teams while doing her schoolwork so that her boyfriend could watch and monitor her remotely.
According to a report by News24, citing Daniel Witz, one of the attorneys representing Cameron’s family, digital records reportedly revealed the alleged monitoring during their nine-month relationship.
The allegation has brought renewed attention to concerns about digital surveillance and controlling behaviour in relationships, following the deaths of the two teenagers in Mpumalanga.
Cameron, 17, and Ethan, 19, a former first-team rugby player at St Stithians Boys’ College, were found dead at a lodge near Sabie on 3 August 2026.
Cameron Waldeck-Cooks allegedly watched while studying
According to the report, Ethan allegedly required Cameron to remain logged into Microsoft Teams while she completed her schoolwork, allowing him to monitor her remotely. Witz reportedly said the digital records also contained allegations that Ethan demanded Cameron behave like his wife and became angry when he believed she was not meeting his expectations.
The report further alleged that Ethan had access to Cameron’s cellphone and social media passwords and regularly checked her online activity.
These claims have raised questions about the extent of the alleged monitoring during their relationship. However, the allegations have not been established as proven findings in court.
Waldeck-Cooks’ death: What the family wants from police
Cameron’s family has called for a thorough investigation into her death and raised concerns about how potential digital evidence was handled.
According to Celeb Gossip, the family’s legal representative said the messages could provide context about the relationship but could not establish exactly what happened in the room where the teenagers were found.
Police initially opened an inquest following the discovery of the bodies. On 7 August, authorities confirmed that a murder case had been opened. The family has also questioned why the teenagers’ cellphones were allegedly returned before a full forensic download had been completed.
Meanwhile, the Coetzee family declined to comment on the allegations, citing the ongoing police investigation and the inquest process. The family also raised the importance of ensuring that any extracted digital information was obtained through a lawful process.
The investigation remains ongoing, and the allegations about the relationship and digital monitoring should not be treated as proof of what happened before the teenagers’ deaths.
