Williamnagar golfer says talent and fair play should take precedence over background as he competes in Shillong tournament
Shillong, October 27: Washington N. Marak, an amateur golfer from Williamnagar in Meghalaya’s East Garo Hills district, is aiming to qualify for the 39th National Games after achieving a single-digit handicap, a milestone in amateur golf.
Marak is representing East Garo Hills and the Garo Hills region at the IIM Season 17 Tournament in Shillong. The competition marks his second amateur tournament in Meghalaya.
Marak credited his progress to the support and encouragement of Marcuise N. Marak, a minister in Meghalaya, the Tura Golfers Association and his coach, Johnwell G. Momin.
He said his immediate ambition was to qualify for the National Games and represent Meghalaya, describing it as an opportunity to represent his district on a major sporting platform.
Marak also raised concerns about objections he said he had faced from some members of Shillong’s golfing fraternity over his background and profession.
He maintained that participation in the sport should be determined by talent, discipline, integrity and performance rather than a golfer’s social or professional background.
“ My background should never define my limits. My dedication, performance and respect for the game should speak for themselves,” Marak said.
He also called on tournament organisers and the concerned committees to examine complaints of alleged cheating and rule violations in some golf tournaments in Shillong.
Marak said any substantiated complaints should be investigated impartially, with appropriate disciplinary action taken where violations are established. He added that penalties should be proportionate to the offence and consistent with the applicable tournament rules.
Emphasising the importance of sportsmanship, Marak said transparent procedures and consistent enforcement of rules were essential to maintaining the credibility of golf tournaments in Meghalaya.
He expressed hope that his participation would help promote the sport in the Garo Hills and encourage more people to take up golf.
Marak thanked those who had supported his golfing journey and said he hoped to continue improving his game while contributing to the growth of golf in the state.
