Five years after former Rangers and Scotland manager Walter Smith died following a battle with cancer, his widow Ethel has chosen to honour his memory by directing a £50,000 charitable donation to the hospital unit that cared for him.
The gift, made through the Emmie Smillie Foundation, was presented to the cancer unit at Vale of Leven Hospital in Alexandria, Scotland, on October 26, 2026, the fifth anniversary of his death.According to STV News, Ethel nominated the unit in recognition of the treatment and support her husband received there. The donation is among the largest the hospital has received and will be used to improve facilities and make treatment more comfortable for patients.
Hospital officials said the exact plans for spending the money were still being determined when the gift was announced.“When I was asked where I would like the money to go, I had no hesitation in nominating the unit here at the Vale,” Ethel said, explaining that the family wanted to acknowledge the care provided by the hospital. “Walter received treatment here, so it felt fitting as a thank you for the care we received from the unit and the hospital in general,” she added.
The donation was formally presented to June Raines, the unit's charge nurse, and Gerry O'Hare, a former clinical nurse specialist who cared for Smith during his treatment. The contribution will support the unit's work serving patients from across the surrounding region.
Cancer unit that cared for Walter Smith
Vale of Leven Hospital is located in Alexandria, West Dunbartonshire, and provides cancer treatment and other services to patients in the west of Scotland.
Its haematology-oncology unit offers day-care treatment, allowing many patients to receive care close to home without requiring an overnight hospital stay. According to Scottish News, the unit has 12 treatment chairs and a phlebotomy service. Its treatments and support include chemotherapy, blood transfusions and symptom management for people with cancer and blood disorders. For the Smith family, the hospital's importance went beyond its medical services.
Ethel's decision to nominate the unit reflected the personal experience of receiving care during a difficult period. Gerry O'Hare, who now works part-time at the Beatson in Glasgow, said the donation would help support a service that had meant a great deal to Smith and his family.“Having worked at the Vale and knowing personally how much the unit meant to Walter and his family, it is wonderful to see such a significant donation coming back to support its patients,” O'Hare said, according to STV News.
He added that the service was important to the local community and welcomed the foundation's contribution towards its continued work.June Raines also thanked the foundation, noting that the unit's ability to provide treatment locally helped patients avoid travelling farther for care. She said the funding would allow the hospital to enhance its facilities and improve the experience of people coming in for treatment.
A charity established after a personal loss
The donation was made through the Emmie Smillie Foundation, established by businessman Andy Smillie after his daughter died from cancer. The foundation raises money to support cancer services across Scotland through charitable contributions and fundraising activities. The latest gift is not the first time the organisation has supported Vale of Leven Hospital. STV News reported that the foundation had made a similar £50,000 donation to the hospital around four years earlier. The new contribution brings together two families' experiences of cancer and loss. The foundation was established in memory of Smillie's daughter, while Ethel's nomination reflects the care her husband received during his illness. The funding will be used to improve the hospital unit's facilities and patient experience, although the precise projects to be supported have not yet been announced. The hospital's leadership welcomed the donation, saying it would help staff continue providing compassionate care to patients and their families.Rebecca Reid, interim director for NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde's Clyde Sector, thanked the foundation and Ethel for selecting the hospital. She said the money would help the unit improve the experience of patients receiving treatment at Vale of Leven.
Walter Smith's legacy beyond football
Smith died aged 73 on October 26, 2021, following a battle with cancer. He remains one of the most respected figures in Scottish football, particularly for his achievements with Rangers, where he enjoyed two successful spells as manager.
During his first spell at Ibrox, Smith won 13 major trophies in seven years before becoming Scotland manager in December 2004. He returned to Rangers in 2007 and added another eight trophies before retiring in 2011 after completing a domestic double. He also managed Everton and led Scotland's national team for three years. His achievements made him a defining figure in Rangers' modern history, while his influence extended to players and fellow managers who worked with him.The donation arrives as supporters and the club continue to remember Smith five years after his death. However, its significance lies not only in the football manager's legacy but also in the practical support it will provide to people receiving cancer treatment.By nominating the unit that cared for her husband, Ethel has ensured that the family's gratitude will translate into support for other patients facing similar challenges. The £50,000 contribution will help the hospital improve its facilities and treatment environment, allowing Smith's memory to be associated with care for the community as well as his achievements on the pitch.
