Baker Hughes has picked up a fresh set of power generation and cooling orders from a US technology company. The package includes Chart dry coolers built to handle AI workloads.
The customer went unnamed, which is fairly standard in a sector where hyperscalers guard their buildout plans closely.
Power and cooling in one package
Baker Hughes gained cooling capability by acquiring Chart Industries, a specialist in heat transfer and thermal management.
Dry coolers address heat rejection to the surrounding air. Chart’s technology is aimed specifically at the high-density cooling requirements of AI-focused facilities.
Chart has reportedly secured hundreds of millions of dollars in orders tied to this kind of work. Folding it into Baker Hughes lets the company pitch a combined offering: generate the power on site, then deal with the heat that power creates.
A busy year for the power business
In the first quarter of 2026, the company logged $1 billion in data center power orders. That single quarter matched the Power Systems business’s entire revenue from 2025.
The company has since raised its sights. Its target for cumulative data center power orders across 2025 through 2027 has been revised upward toward $3 billion.
Several large deals fill out the picture:
Dynamis Power Solutions: Baker Hughes booked an order for 76 NovaLT16 turbines, amounting to around 1.3 GW, during the second and third quarters of 2026. Those units are slated to serve both hypermobile data centers and oil and gas platforms.
Kodiak Gas Services: Multi-year agreements with Kodiak target a maximum of 1.8 GW of power supplied by Baker Hughes.
Venture Global and GE Vernova: On October 15, 2026, Baker Hughes announced a Power Frame Agreement covering up to 16 power islands using gas and steam turbines. The arrangement supports LNG operations alongside potential data centers, with equipment deliveries scheduled from 2028 to 2034.
Why an oilfield company is selling to tech
CEO Lorenzo Simonelli has emphasized behind-the-meter generation as the answer to the bottleneck of securing grid connections, which in many regions take years. The idea is simple: rather than waiting on the utility, a facility builds its own power plant on site and runs on gas.
Simonelli has framed this as serving two demand streams at once. One is LNG operations, the company’s traditional turf. The other is the expanding AI economy, which needs power faster than grids can deliver it.
The NovaLT16 order illustrates the overlap neatly. The same turbine model is headed to oil and gas platforms and to mobile data center deployments.
What this means
For investors, the appeal rests on visibility. Multi-year contracts measured in gigawatts, with deliveries extending as far as 2034, give the company a clearer read on future revenue than the cyclical oilfield business typically allows. The upward revision toward $3 billion in cumulative data center orders signals that management sees demand still building.
There are real risks to weigh. Several of these arrangements are frame agreements or carry ceilings, such as the up to 16 power islands with Venture Global and the maximum 1.8 GW with Kodiak, which means final volumes may land below the headline capacity. The Venture Global deal also references potential data centers, and long-dated projects can shift as financing, permitting, and AI spending plans evolve.
