Camera test: In Mallorca with what might be the best camera smartphone

Oppo invited us to Mallorca for the launch of the new Find X10 series (we reported on it). We were there and took the opportunity to take the new Find X10 Pro Max camera flagship on an extensive photo tour. We also brought along the optional Hasselblad teleconverter, which promises even higher zoom levels.

The camera system of the Oppo Find X10 Pro Max features no fewer than three sensors with 200 MP each. The main camera uses a 1/1.28-inch Samsung ISOCELL HPC with a fast f/1.5 aperture and a 24 mm focal length. Thanks to DeepPix technology, the sensor is said to achieve a dynamic range of up to 17 stops.

The ultra-wide-angle camera also has a resolution of 200 MP. Its 1/1.56-inch sensor (Samsung ISOCELL HP5) is paired with an f/2.2 aperture and a 13 mm focal length. Autofocus also enables macro shots from a distance of four centimeters.

Particularly interesting is the 200 MP periscope camera, which also features a 1/1.56-inch  sensor (ISOCELL HP 5), an f/2.1 aperture and a 70 mm focal length. It offers approximately 3x optical zoom. The optional Hasselblad teleconverter extends this to almost 10x relative to the main camera. An additional 24-channel multispectral sensor is intended to improve color reproduction. Oppo's LUMO True Image Engine handles image processing. Video recording is possible at up to 8K at 30 fps or 4K at 120 fps.

Beyond the cameras, the flagship offers a MediaTek Dimensity 9600 Pro, a 7,150 mAh battery and ColorOS 17 based on Android 17. Our numerous test shots show how the ambitious camera setup performs under Mallorca's sun. All photos were taken by the author and feature a watermark that the manufacturer offers as an option in the settings. This makes it easier to keep track of the shots and also provides additional information about them.

The Oppo Find X10 Pro Max's 200 MP main camera makes a very good impression. In daylight, images impress with a high level of detail, a wide dynamic range and balanced exposure. Even in high-contrast scenes, plenty of detail is preserved in both bright and shadowy areas of the image. Color reproduction is vivid, with blue and green tones in particular sometimes appearing a little intense. Image sharpness is high, without any noticeably aggressive oversharpening.

The main camera also delivers pleasing results in low light. The atmosphere of nighttime scenes is captured well, although bright light sources are occasionally blown out and some detail is lost in very dark areas. Image noise remains low overall.

The 2x in-sensor zoom with a focal length of 47 mm also delivers detailed images and expands the photographic possibilities. Overall, the main camera impresses with high image quality and pleasing, if not always entirely natural, color tuning.

The Oppo Find X10 Pro Max's 200 MP ultra-wide-angle camera delivers impressive results. With its focal length of 13 mm, it is particularly well suited to landscape and architectural photography. The photos show a high level of detail, good dynamic range, and mostly balanced exposure. Even fine textures, such as the stone walls in Mallorca's alleyways, are rendered clearly.

However, sharpness drops off slightly toward the edges of the image, and minor distortions are also visible. Color reproduction is sometimes quite vivid, particularly in the sky. Depending on the lighting conditions, slight differences in white balance are also apparent. The camera also impresses with pleasing detail reproduction in close-up shots.

The 200 MP periscope camera is one of the highlights of the Oppo Find X10 Pro Max. Even at its native focal length of 70 mm, it impresses with a high level of detail, natural colors and a good dynamic range. At 140 mm, fine details, such as individual brush bristles or surface textures, remain clearly discernible.

Even at around 230 mm, the images still offer plenty of detail. Buildings, boats and vegetation are rendered well, although image processing increasingly intervenes. At 701 millimeters, sharpness visibly decreases, but the results remain quite usable.

Even higher magnifications are also possible. At 1,400 and especially 2,800 millimeters, however, digital image processing reaches its limits. Fine details are increasingly smoothed out, and edges show visibly artificial sharpening. Nevertheless, it is remarkable how recognizable distant subjects remain.

With the optional teleconverter, the Oppo Find X10 Pro Max significantly extends its zoom capabilities. Even at 460 and 920 mm, the shots impress with good detail. Even at 1,363 mm, rows of windows and structures on a distant ferry remain surprisingly recognizable. Compared to similar focal lengths without the converter, the images sometimes appear more detailed and less heavily smoothed.

At 2,760 mm, sharpness decreases noticeably. While the maximum focal length of 4,600 mm demonstrates the enormous reach, loss of detail and atmospheric disturbances significantly impair image quality.

A major drawback becomes apparent in use: The teleconverter covers the other camera lenses. To switch to the main or ultra-wide-angle camera, the attachment must first be removed. This is cumbersome, particularly for spontaneous shots, and significantly limits flexibility. The Oppo Find X9 Ultra handles this better.

As a child I was fascinated by my Commodore 16, and this sparked my enthusiasm for computers. Using my first modem, I surfed the BTX videotext system and later the World Wide Web. I have always been captivated by the latest technologies, and this is especially true for mobile devices such as smartphones and tablets. I’ve been part of the Notebookcheck team since 2013 and have also on occasion written for Notebookinfo.de, and I’m looking forward to testing new innovations for our readers. I like to spend my spare time indulging in photography and barbecues and being with my family.
