MONROVIA — FrontPage Africa Editor and Head of Newsroom Gerald C. Koinyeneh has challenged Liberia’s newest high school graduates to treat education as a lifelong tool for confronting poverty, ignorance and disease, warning that their circumstances should never be allowed to determine the limits of their future.

Koinyeneh made the call Saturday, October 24 while delivering the keynote address at the graduation and closing convocation of Palmfield Community Christian School in the Lee Hill Community, Lower Johnsonville Township, Montserrado County.
Speaking under the theme:, “Education—The Most Reliable Tool to Fight Poverty, Ignorance, and Disease,” Koinyeneh told members of the 2025/2026 graduating class that completing high school should not be viewed as the end of their education, but as the beginning of a new chapter filled with opportunities and responsibilities.
“Your circumstances may influence your journey, but they do not have to determine your destination,” Koinyeneh told the graduates.
He urged students who may face financial difficulties, family responsibilities, peer pressure or other barriers to remain committed to their ambitions, stressing that temporary setbacks should not become permanent limitations.
According to Koinyeneh, graduates unable to immediately afford university should explore scholarships, financial assistance, vocational training, apprenticeships and other opportunities capable of equipping them with practical skills.
He also cautioned against measuring success solely through university degrees or professional titles.
Liberia, he said, needs not only doctors, nurses, lawyers, engineers and professors, but also electricians, plumbers, mechanics, carpenters, masons, technicians and other skilled workers whose services are essential to national development.
“There is dignity in every honest profession, and every occupation that contributes positively to society deserves respect,” he said.
Koinyeneh used the story of three friends from rural Liberia to illustrate how education can influence life opportunities.
According to the story, all three friends completed high school and initially shared the dream of attending the University of Liberia.
However, financial concerns and family responsibilities caused two of them to remain in their hometowns, where one became a businessman and the other a farmer.
The third pursued higher education, eventually earning advanced degrees and returning to Liberia to serve in a senior professional capacity.
Koinyeneh said the lesson was not that university education guarantees success or that people without university degrees cannot prosper. Rather, he said, education expands opportunities, builds knowledge and skills and prepares individuals to take advantage of possibilities that may otherwise remain inaccessible.
He described education as a bridge connecting young people to opportunities, new ideas, professional networks and broader possibilities.
The FrontPage Africa editor further argued that education remains one of Liberia’s strongest tools for confronting poverty.
With relevant knowledge and skills, he said, people can improve their chances of securing employment, establishing businesses, earning income and supporting their families.
He also linked education to the fight against ignorance, noting that educated citizens are better equipped to question information, distinguish facts from misinformation, understand their rights and responsibilities, and participate meaningfully in national affairs.
On public health, Koinyeneh said education helps communities understand hygiene, sanitation, nutrition, disease prevention and the importance of seeking appropriate medical care.
He encouraged graduates to continue learning beyond the classroom, emphasizing discipline, critical thinking, communication, responsible decision-making and personal development.
“Do not allow peer pressure, fear, or low self-esteem to determine your future,” he warned.
Koinyeneh also commended the parents and guardians who sacrificed to educate their children, as well as the teachers and administrators of Palmfield Community Christian School for preparing students for the next stage of their lives.
He urged parents to continue guiding their children after graduation and encouraged teachers to maintain their commitment to quality education, discipline and character development.
As he concluded, Koinyeneh left graduates with three messages: never stop learning, never allow circumstances to define their potential, and use their education to make a positive difference in their families, communities and country.
“You may not all become ministers, engineers, doctors, business owners, or professors,” he said. “But you can all strive to become responsible, hardworking, and productive citizens who contribute positively to society.”
He reminded the graduates that Liberia’s future would be shaped by the decisions made today and the opportunities created for the next generation.
“Dream boldly. Work diligently. Learn continuously. Never give up on yourselves,” Koinyeneh told the graduating class.
He ended by congratulating the graduates and calling for continued investment in education as a foundation for Liberia’s future.
