The National Police, the Guardia Civil and Spain's National Intelligence Centre (CNI) are on alert for potential violent unrest on the streets of Palma, following calls to action by Blocus, an extremist group linked to looting and attacks on businesses in France as well as in Barcelona. Intelligence units have been reinforced in anticipation of a 'flash' mobilisation, quite possibly this coming Saturday.
Organisers are said not to trust social media platforms because of possible infiltration by undercover agents. There is therefore strict vetting of new members: "Their goal is to broadcast the call to action only minutes before it begins, leaving us no time to react," intelligence sources say.
Investigators have obtained information indicating that organisers are instructing participants to arrive at gatherings - coordinated events aimed at violence or looting - dressed in black, wearing caps or balaclavas, and, above all, keeping their faces covered to avoid identification by security cameras or press photography.
Among business owners in Palma, there is growing fear and concern that the incidents seen in Barcelona, where dozens of shops were vandalised and over 120 people, mostly minors, were arrested, could be repeated.
The security forces suggest that 'Blocus' may not have a formal, established cell in Mallorca; instead, it appears to organise potential members online through a process of digital recruitment. Private Telegram groups are subsequently deleted to ensure no trace is left behind.
The National Police and the Guardia Civil, in close collaboration with the island’s local police forces, have launched an operation to ensure security should an 'express' call-to-action be announced on social media over the weekend. This would most likely be in Palma, but the possibility of something occurring elsewhere on the island isn't being ruled out.
