In the aftermath of the province of B.C. electing a majority Conservative Party government, some folks south of the border are reacting, including U.S. President Donald Trump.
Controversial U.S. Senator Ted Cruz also reacted to the news with a simple emoji on X, in response to a Polymarket post about the Conservatives winning a landslide and returning to power for the first time since 1928.

Meanwhile, Trump shared an article on his own social media platform, Truth Social.
Truth Social
Cruz’s post led to hundreds of comments, with many debating the very nature of Conservative politics in Canada vs. America. Lots of comments suggested that Canadian Conservative politics are akin to the Democrats in the U.S.
While many celebrated Cruz’s post, many called him out directly.
“Oh shut up Cruz, you have no idea how Canadian politics works,” read one response.
Someone else suggested that OneBC, led by controversial figure Dallas Brodie, is the “equivalent of MAGA in B.C.”
They added that OneBC only got 1.5 per cent of the vote.
Trump’s Truth Social post received over 15,000 likes and hundreds of replies.
“Even British Columbia is waking up! When the left loses BC after almost 100 years, you know common sense is contagious. America First is going international,” someone said.
“They are waking up,” said another reply.
David Eby’s Trump rhetoric
BC NDP
Somewhat related, a huge part of resigned BC NDP leader Eby’s early campaign messaging was focused on fears around Trump and telling voters that a Conservative government would bring U.S.-style politics to B.C.
That messaging mostly fell on deaf ears, and it appears, based on the landslide victory and some political pundits, that voters were too annoyed about the snap election call and certain decisions Eby made while in power for the anti-Trump campaign to make a real impact.
Political analyst Stewart Prest said Eby “largely defeated himself,” a sentiment echoed by many other experts.
Eby did make one move related to the U.S. tensions that was relatively popular before the snap election call, when he introduced new signs at the border, reminding people that Canada would never be the 51st State.
Even our neighbours south of the border in Bellingham seemed to approve of the sassy signs.
Just two weeks later, on Sept. 22, Eby called the snap election.
Nearly every poll since then favoured the Conservatives, with the gap growing wider the closer we got to final voting day on Oct. 24.
Trump’s ongoing war with Canada
Trump has been in an ongoing trade war with Canada, something that former U.S. President Barack Obama mocked in a recent public appearance, joking about Canada being an “evil empire.”
Former President Obama criticizes President Trump for issuing tariffs on Canada: “Canada is your neighbor… They are the nicest people… And somehow we’ve gotten them so mad because they’re just constantly being abused.” https://t.co/tHxFVJMB8J

Obama also joked about Trump being in a trade war with a country that brought us Martin Short and Maple syrup.
“They are the nicest people,” he added.
According to The Canadian Press, in response to Trump’s apparent celebration of the Conservative victory, Doerkson has stated publicly that he doesn’t consider himself a Trump ally.
Eby held firm on certain issues relating to the States, like ensuring B.C. didn’t stock American liquor while Trump was attacking the country.
It remains to be seen how Doerkson and the newly elected Conservative government will react to Trump and the wild world of American politics.
