An expanded community pharmacy trial will offer more women accessible and convenient care, having previously catered only for concession holders.
From 2027, the federal government will run a 12-month trial so that female patients can seek pharmacy treatment for uncomplicated urinary tract infections (UTIs) and access hormonal contraception.
The trial scheme will see the cost of pharmacist consultation covered by the federal government, equating to up to $38 in savings per visit, and patients paying no more than $25 per script.
Health Minister Mark Butler said the policy was designed to make it easier for an estimated 900,000 Australian women to get care that fit with their lives.
