Machado Ready to Meet Delcy Rodríguez

VENEZUELA · POLITICS

Venezuela’s opposition leader María Corina Machado is ready to meet interim president Delcy Rodríguez, her party said on Monday, 26 October 2026. The offer comes a day after Machado, the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize winner, returned after about ten months abroad.

For US readers, a meeting would test whether Washington’s push for a negotiated transition can include the opposition’s best-known figure. Machado’s return, credited by Secretary of State Marco Rubio to US-backed talks, has put the question of an election date back at the centre.

What Machado’s Camp Said

Claudia Macero, spokeswoman of Machado’s party Vente Venezuela, said on Unión Radio, a Caracas radio station, that Machado would sit down with Delcy Rodríguez. Macero added that Machado would meet anyone who has to be at the table, with a clear agenda.

A transition, Macero said, “requires all parties” and cannot leave Machado out. She argued that no credible election is possible without the strength and legitimacy of the people Machado represents.

Who Are the Two Women

María Corina Machado is Venezuela’s best-known opposition leader, an engineer and former lawmaker who founded the Vente Venezuela party. She won the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize and left Venezuela in December 2025, travelling to Oslo for the Nobel events.

Delcy Rodríguez became interim president after US forces captured Nicolás Maduro on 3 January 2026. She had been Maduro’s vice president, and she now leads a government that talks with part of the opposition with US backing.

How Machado Came Home

Machado announced her return on Sunday, 25 October, with an X post reading “I am here, with you”. Her party then showed her at a church in Santa Rosa, a district of Barquisimeto in Lara state.

She then travelled by road toward Caracas, with supporters gathering along the way. Her advisers said she had made seven earlier attempts to return.

What Washington and Caracas Said

Rubio wrote on X that the conditions for Machado’s safe return were the direct result of US-supported reconciliation talks. He said the talks freed hundreds of political prisoners and returned hundreds of exiles, calling them Venezuela’s best chance in 30 years.

The interim government had not publicly commented on her return when the offer was made. Jorge Arreaza, a National Assembly deputy, wrote on X that the dialogue does not seek “the neutralization or disappearance of the other”, without naming Machado.

Why a Meeting Is Not a Deal

Machado said in February that she would meet Delcy Rodríguez “if necessary” to agree a timetable for a transition. Before her return she also said she was willing to “talk to whoever needs to be talked to”.

Machado is also not at the table of the US-backed talks, which the opposition delegation under Dinorah Figuera attends. The third round ended on 21 October without an election date.

What Prediction Markets Say

On Polymarket, a crypto betting platform, traders gave 6.2% to US recognition of Machado as leader by 31 December (26 October, 3:08 p.m. ET). A second bet, on a Trump endorsement of her for president in 2026, stood at 14.5%.

The recognition contract has traded about US$201,700 in total, and the endorsement contract about US$125,100. Earlier price moves on her return are in our reports on the return odds and on the jump after she arrived.

Why we show this: prediction markets turn real-money bets into a live probability that moves within minutes of the news, which is why investors, campaigns and newsrooms in the United States now follow them closely. We show them next to polls and official results, never instead of them.

What It Means for US Readers

Washington has diplomatic ties and an oil deal with the interim government, so the talks shape US energy policy. A meeting between the two women would show whether investors can expect a settlement or a longer standoff.

Venezuelans in the United States are watching the same signal, since an election date would shape decisions about returning home. For now, nothing in the offer changes sanctions or the oil deal.

What Is Not Known

No date, venue or format for a meeting has been announced, and Delcy Rodríguez has not responded. It is not known whether Machado will join the US-backed talks or hold a separate encounter.

Machado’s agenda has not been published, and the offer so far rests on her spokeswoman’s radio interview, with Machado herself yet to address the country. No presidential election date exists, and the July 2027 election date that opposition marchers propose has not been adopted.
