DeMeco Ryans will not be making any staff changes, he said Monday.
The Houston Texans are 2-5 heading into the open week, their worst start during the Ryans era. His previous three seasons at the helm all resulted in playoff berths.
"We are where we are right now," Ryans said. "Where we are, it's not good enough."
While Ryans won't make any staff additions or subtractions, he has already made a change in duties this year.
ALEXANDER:Any hope after two wins is in tatters
Ryans already took over play-calling from defensive coordinator Matt Burke after the 0-4 start, which was a reversal of what happened last year. After Houston started the 2025 season with three losses, Burke took over play-calling from Ryans.
Ryans did say he is confident in what the team is doing schematically.
The Texans led the NFL last year in yards allowed per game but have dropped to the middle of the pack in 2026 and are allowing 65 more yards per game. Offenses have been able to generate more explosive plays versus the Houston defense and general manager Nick Caserio said Monday the team is one of the worst tackling teams in the league.
"This is 2026," Ryans said. "I know you all like to keep going back to 2025. Every year, each team changes. It's a new team. Every team that didn't make the playoffs last year, should they not make the playoffs again this year?"
