The Dundalk Magpies, Dundalk Rugby Football Club’s Inclusive Tag Rugby team for youth players with additional needs and learning disabilities, celebrated a special milestone at Mill Road last weekend as they reached the end of the pilot programme.
The pilot has been a wonderful success, welcoming 14 new players to the club and creating opportunities for them to enjoy rugby in a fun, supportive and inclusive environment. Volunteers from the club’s boys’ and girls’ youth teams have worked alongside the adult coaching team, helping to create a special and welcoming atmosphere. This peer involvement has brought incredible energy to the group and fostered friendships across the club, creating something truly magical both on and off the pitch.
The club is thrilled to announce that the team will continue training throughout the winter months and right through to the end of the rugby season. Dundalk Magpies are immensely grateful to Louth Sports Partnership for funding indoor training and for their continued support since the team’s inception. We are also extremely thankful for the backing of the IRFU, whose support has been invaluable.
The success of the Dundalk Magpies has shown just how important inclusive sporting opportunities are for young people with additional needs. The objective is to give players the opportunity to experience the joy, confidence and sense of belonging that comes with being part of a rugby club. If any local business would be interested in being a sponsor for a team of this nature, Dundalk Magpies would be delighted to hear from you.
If you know a young person, age eight to 16, who you think would enjoy joining the Dundalk Magpies, please contact Eleanor on 087 791 6349, as there are a limited number of places still available.
