A 55-year-old man was beaten to death allegedly by his son in Sreepur, Gazipur, early today, police said.
The deceased, Abdus Samad, was a resident of Saitalia village. His son, Anwar Hossain, has been on the run since the incident.
Confirming the incident, Mohammad Shahinur Alam, officer-in-charge of Sreepur Police Station, said police had launched a drive to arrest Anwar. The victim’s family was preparing to file a case over the incident, he added.
According to the police official, Anwar is a drug addict and had been sent to rehabilitation centres several times. However, he resumed taking drugs each time he returned from a centre.
Witnesses said Anwar returned home late on Sunday night under the influence of alcohol and got into an argument with family members. As the situation escalated, his father tried to calm him down and stop him.
Enraged, Anwar allegedly struck his father repeatedly on the head and chest with a stick, killing him on the spot. He then fled the scene.
Police later recovered the body and sent it to the morgue of Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital in Gazipur for an autopsy.
