As the U.S. government tightens national security reviews of foreign-made mobile robots, a South Korean robotics company has cleared a key regulatory hurdle, potentially strengthening its position in the North American market.
T-Robotics, a South Korean company specializing in logistics and manufacturing robots, announced on Oct. 26 that its autonomous mobile robot (AMR) and automated guided vehicle (AGV) product lines had received conditional approval from the U.S. Department of War (DoW). The approval allows the covered products to qualify for an exemption from the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) Covered List, which identifies equipment and services deemed to pose unacceptable risks to U.S. national security.
The United States has tightened security requirements for foreign-produced advanced robotic devices and communications equipment. Products covered by the FCC restrictions may be barred from receiving the equipment authorization required for their importation, marketing or sale in the country. These rules have created a significant regulatory hurdle for overseas robotics manufacturers seeking to enter the U.S. market.
T-Robotics said it had met U.S. authorities’ communications and data security requirements to obtain the conditional approval. The decision could reduce regulatory uncertainty surrounding logistics automation projects the company is pursuing with U.S. factories and major customers. It may also create an opportunity for T-Robotics to expand its role as an alternative supplier as some Chinese-made robotic products face restrictions under the U.S. security framework.
The approval is significant beyond technical compliance because security and supply chain reliability have become increasingly important considerations for companies investing in automation. T-Robotics plans to expand its pipeline of North American logistics robotics projects, drawing on its hardware durability and precision autonomous navigation technology.
A T-Robotics official said the approval reflected recognition of the company’s AMR technology and its communications and security reliability. The company would accelerate its North American expansion by building on a stable supply chain and continue working to enhance corporate and shareholder value, the official added.
T-Robotics is also pursuing government-backed research and development projects and intellectual property protection to advance its robotics technology. In September, it was selected to lead a government-funded project worth approximately 4.5 billion won to develop artificial intelligence transformation (AX) technology for humanoid robots.
Through an R&D project run by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, the company is also helping develop a physical AI-based unmanned system for optical module curing processes. It has also secured U.S. patent registration for a robot designed to transfer semiconductor glass substrates.
The conditional approval offers T-Robotics an opportunity to address regulatory barriers while advancing its technology. Its ability to capitalize on that opportunity will depend on continued compliance with the approval conditions and its success in converting North American market opportunities into commercial orders.
