The Philadelphia Eagles were already confronting a difficult season without their starting quarterback. Now, the controversy surrounding Jalen Hurts' blood clot diagnosis has developed into a dispute that reportedly has NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and league officials deeply frustrated.
Philadelphia's decision to play Hurts after doctors identified a superficial blood clot has attracted considerable scrutiny, particularly following the subsequent discovery of more serious complications that could keep the quarterback sidelined for the remainder of the season.

However, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer, the NFL's frustration is not primarily directed at the medical decisions themselves. Instead, league officials are reportedly unhappy with the Eagles' failure to provide clear public explanations about Hurts' examinations, treatment and travel arrangements.
The situation escalated Sunday when the NFL and NFL Players Association confirmed they were jointly reviewing the matter.
"The NFL and NFL Players Association are working together to review the matter," the organizations announced.
The Philadelphia Inquirer reported that several NFL sources expressed frustration with how the Eagles communicated Hurts' deteriorating condition, particularly after Goodell faced questions about the situation during last week's owners meetings in New York.
"They're furious," one longtime source with connections to the league office told the newspaper.
Hurts' medical problems began when a bruise appeared on October 8. Doctors identified a stable superficial blood clot two days later, before the quarterback played on October 11.
Subsequent examinations revealed that the clot had moved, prompting Philadelphia to place Hurts on injured reserve on October 17.
Two days later, doctors diagnosed deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary emboli, serious complications that require extended treatment and could end his season.
The Eagles have provided limited public information about those developments, leaving head coach Nick Sirianni to address questions normally directed toward medical personnel.
NFL medical officer defends Hurts treatment decisions
Despite the criticism surrounding Philadelphia's communication, NFL chief medical officer Dr. Allen Sills has publicly supported the care Hurts received.
"The notion that there are external factors or that any of our physicians would put a player in harm's way, that's nonsense," Sills said.
He continued: "I think there was incredible vigilance, there was conservative care, state-of-the-art imaging that was done in London."
Sills also expressed confidence in the timing of the medical decisions, saying he believed everyone involved had acted with appropriate caution.
The NFLPA retains the option of pursuing a fully independent investigation if it believes the joint review has been obstructed or misled.
Eagles face growing scrutiny
The controversy adds another complication to Philadelphia's disappointing start, with the team sitting at 2-4 following four consecutive defeats.
Backup quarterback Tanner McKee is expected to lead the offense against the Dallas Cowboys on Monday Night Football while Hurts remains unavailable.
Meanwhile, general manager Howie Roseman and the Eagles' senior medical personnel haven't publicly addressed the outstanding questions about the quarterback's treatment.
The reported anger within the NFL highlights the distinction between confidence in medical care and dissatisfaction with how sensitive information has been communicated.
With the joint review underway, Philadelphia faces continuing questions about its handling of a situation that has extended well beyond the football field.
