Akhtaruzzaman denied bail in assault case

A Dhaka court yesterday rejected the bail petition of former lawmaker Major (retd) Akhtaruzzaman in a case over the alleged assault of an on-duty security official and obstruction of government work at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.

Judge Md Sadekin Habib Bappi of the Additional Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court-5 passed the order, said defence lawyer Abdur Razzak.

Airport security officer Mohammad Shahriar Alam Sajib filed the case against Akhtaruzzaman with Airport Police Station on October 2. Detectives arrested him at his Dhaka Cantonment residence the same day.

The following day, a court placed Akhtaruzzaman on a one-day remand. He was sent to jail on October 4 after a magistrate rejected his bail petition.
