LAHORE – The Punjab government has extended the detention of Aleema Khan, Uzma Khan and Noreen Niazi by another 30 days, the Lahore High Court was informed during a hearing on a petition seeking the recovery of the three sisters of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan.
Justice Abhar Gul Khan heard the petition.
Punjab Home Secretary and Kot Lakhpat Jail Superintendent appeared before the court.
A report submitted by the home secretary informed the court that the provincial government had extended the detention of the three women for another 30 days.
According to the government counsel, the Lahore deputy commissioner had forwarded a proposal to the Punjab government recommending a further extension of their detention. The government subsequently approved the extension on October 7.
During the proceedings, the court questioned the petitioner’s counsel over the absence of the deputy commissioner as a respondent in the case.
The judge observed that the detention notification had been issued by the deputy commissioner, but the official had not been made a party to the petition.
The court told the counsel that he should have been aware that it could not issue an order beyond the scope of the petition.
The proceedings were subsequently concluded after the court took the home secretary’s report on record and disposed of the petition.
The case concerns the detention of the three women, who are sisters of the incarcerated PTI founder. Their detention has also prompted legal proceedings regarding their access to prison facilities and other related matters.
In a separate development, the Lahore High Court had previously directed the authorities to decide, in accordance with the law, on a request concerning Aleema Khan’s meetings with visitors and access to medical facilities in prison.
The latest extension means that the detention of Aleema Khan, Uzma Khan and Noreen Niazi will continue for another 30 days under the provincial government’s order.
