By Zoila Palma: The Belize Network of NGOs (BNN) is calling for greater accountability and integrity in public office, urging Alexis Rosado to step down as Belize’s Co-Agent in its case before the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
“The BNN aligns with the current call for Alexis Rosado to step down as Belize’s Co-Agent in Belize’s case before the International Court of Justice,” the BNN said.
The BNN said public officials and individuals serving in government roles must be held to high standards of conduct and remain accountable to the public.
BNN cited Section 121 of the Constitution of Belize, which states that public officials must not “demean their office or position” or undermine public confidence in the integrity of government.
In addition, the BNN said those who receive compensation and benefits from taxpayers have a responsibility to uphold public trust and maintain standards of integrity while serving in an official capacity.
The network also called for consistent protocols to address situations in which public officials or individuals entrusted with public responsibilities face serious criminal charges or allegations.
BNN said these measures should include temporary removal from official duties until the matter is determined by the judiciary.
It stressed that its position on Rosado is not intended to prejudge guilt or innocence, but to uphold expectations of accountability in public service.
“Public trust must be earned and protected,” BNN stated, adding that integrity in public office is “not discretionary or optional.”
