Athletics – Boyne AC round-up
Storm warnings, muddy hills and difficult conditions were no match for the determination of Boyne AC’s young athletes as they travelled to Gowran in Kilkenny, for the Leinster Cross Country Championships last Saturday.
While most sensible people were tucked up indoors, these hardy youngsters proudly pulled on their green and yellow club colours and headed off to represent their club and county.
A wet, hilly and unforgiving course, with deep mud in places, tested every athlete, but the Boyne contingent rose magnificently to the challenge.
In the U12 Boys 2,000m race, Malachy Brodigan, Cormac Brodigan, Conor Hughes and Rhys Farrell produced four determined performances, battling through the difficult terrain with tremendous grit.
Caitlin Hughes showed wonderful resilience in the U14 Girls 3,000m race, while Will Gow delivered a cracking performance in the U14 Boys event over the same distance.
Isabelle Winters tackled a gruelling 4,000m in the U16 Girls race, showing great courage and determination against strong provincial opposition.
Malachy Brodigan leads the field in the Boys U12 race.
There was medal success in the U18 Boys 5,000m event where Seamus Keenan finished an excellent 11th overall, while teammate Jack Willis also produced a courageous run. Both lads played their part in helping the Louth team secure a fantastic Leinster silver medal.
Although not everyone returned home with silverware, every athlete had reason to be proud. Despite the miserable conditions, there were no complaints, just tremendous determination and plenty of smiles at the finish line.
Trick or Treat at the Track
Boyne AC is inviting the entire community to join them for Trick or Treat at the Track, a special Hallowe’en fundraiser in aid of Drogheda Hospice, taking place at Lourdes Stadium this Saturday, October 31, from 10am to 12 noon.
The event is being held in loving memory of Austin Tiernan, a wonderful man who dedicated so much of his time to Boyne AC and quietly helped countless others behind the scenes.
The club is stressing that everyone is welcome, whether they belong to an athletics club or not. Families, friends, neighbours and children of all ages are encouraged to come along for two hours of Hallowe’en fun, including fancy dress, face painting, games, sweets, treats and a sizzling barbecue.
Those attending can run, walk or jog as many laps as they wish, or simply come along to enjoy the atmosphere.
All proceeds will go to Drogheda Hospice, a truly deserving local charity providing invaluable care and support to families in our community. Donations of any amount will be greatly appreciated.
Boyne AC hopes the people of Drogheda will come out in force to support this wonderful cause and help make the morning a fitting tribute to Austin.
