Delta Air Lines Cancels This 7-Hour Nonstop Boeing 757 Route: See Map Now

Delta Air Lines is removing its summer seasonal route from Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport (DTW) to Reykjavík's Keflavik International Airport (KEF) from its 2027 schedule, ending a Boeing 757-200 route that was originally launched in May 2023. The approximately 2,785-mile (4,482-km) crossing had westbound block times approaching seven hours, making it one of the airline's longer narrowbody services.

Over the course of its operation, Delta carried 109,122 round-trip passengers on the route, achieving a 79.5% load factor. But this was not enough to keep it in place as another route to Reykjavík returns in the spring, and Delta's once-mighty Boeing 757 transatlantic network dwindles to just two remaining routes.

Delta Ends Its Detroit-Iceland Service

Detroit–Keflavik flights actually began with Icelandair, which announced in late 2022 that it would start new Boeing 737 MAX 8 flights between Michigan and the 'Land of Fire and Ice' from May 2023. The approach was straightforward: to undercut existing carriers on flights to Europe, while giving travelers the opportunity of a stopover in Iceland. Delta responded as expected, defending its hub by announcing the same route, but starting three days earlier.

A few years of competitive service ensued, but when Icelandair withdrew from the route in January of this year, Delta subsequently shortened its 2026 operating season to July 7–August 23, despite originally planning service from May into September. Now it has chosen to cancel the route for 2027, instead restoring summer seasonal service from Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) to Reykjavík from April 12, operating daily until October 30.

The returning Boston service will also use a 757-200, and alongside the route from Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) to Reykjavík, represents the last two European routes for the aircraft type. Delta's wider Iceland network also includes New York JFK Airport (JFK), where the Boeing 767-300ER is used.

Delta's Transatlantic 757 Network Shrinks

The 757 once enabled Delta to operate scores of thinner European routes from New York, Boston and secondary US airports. But over the past decade, many have either disappeared or transitioned to widebodies. Of the 24 Transatlantic Routes that operated with the 757 ten years ago, just the two to Iceland remain. Half have transitioned to widebody operations, nine have disappeared, and the route from Raleigh–Durham International Airport (RDU) to Paris Charles De Gaulle Airport (CDG) has been transitioned to Delta's SkyTeam partner, Air France.

This substantial transformation is strategic. President Glen Hauenstein explained during Delta's October 2025 earnings call that the airline was sticking with its premium widebody offering for transatlantic routes, which include Delta One suites and Premium Select. He stated:

"Our product is best in class in the transatlantic market. So we’ve chosen not to fly narrowbodies in the transatlantic market because of product and brand issues."

Consequently, the smaller 757 routes were faced with a choice. Either they were able to support widebody economics — which became increasingly possible as premium seats were added, and overall seat counts dropped — or risk cancellation. As a result, Delta has retained higher capacity routes to partner hubs such as Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS) or Copenhagen Airport (CPH), but dropped thinner routes such as Malaga and Ponta Delgada or routes that didn't originate from its own US hubs.

The A321neo Is Taking Over The 757s Role At Delta

Delta is now gradually retiring its 757 fleet. Its regulatory filings showed the airline operating 100 757-200s falling in June 2022, and that has now fallen to 70 in operation today, with six retirements so far this year. Meanwhile, the incoming Airbus A321neo fleet has been moving in the opposite direction.

Delta has been unusually explicit about what comes next. At its 2023 Investor Day, the airline placed the 757-200 directly alongside the A321neo as its next-generation replacement, estimating around 10% lower seat costs, 13 more premium seats, and an additional $4-5 million in annual contribution per replacement aircraft.

Delta currently has 110 A321neos operating and has 79 on firm order after it exercised options for 34 aircraft earlier this year, and also retains further options for 36 additional A321neos. The A321neo will not shoulder the entire 757 replacement burden. Delta also has commitments for 100 Boeing 737 MAX 10s plus 30 options, giving it another high-capacity, high-premium narrowbody for domestic flying once the type enters service.
