KOTA KINABALU: An 11-year-old boy was seriously injured after being hit by a car while crossing the road outside Sekolah Kebangsaan Darau in Manggatal.
The boy sustained a head injury in the 6.10am incident and was rushed to Likas Hospital for treatment.
Kota Kinabalu district police chief Assistant Commissioner Shahrudin Mat Husain said preliminary investigations found that the accident involved a Proton Waja driven by a 69-year-old man travelling from Manggatal town.
He said the boy was crossing the road from right to left at the pedestrian crossing when the car approached.
"The driver was unable to avoid the boy due to the short distance and hit him in the right lane.
"The impact threw the boy forward before he was taken to hospital for further treatment," he said in a statement.
Shahrudin said the case was being investigated under Section 43(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
He urged those with information about the incident to contact investigating officer Sergeant Mazlan Mursalam at 012-3036605 or visit the nearest police station.
Closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage of the incident went viral on social media earlier, showing the boy being hit while crossing the road.
The footage showed the boy getting out of a Perodua Bezza on the opposite side of the road before crossing towards the school, where he was struck by a car and thrown forward.'
