Kyle Larson won by inches. Joey Logano ended up upside down. RFK Racing nearly lapped the field, and the championship standings got a major shakeup.
On paper, Sunday’s YellaWood 500 at Talladega Superspeedway had everything NASCAR fans could ask for.
So why were so many people calling it one of the worst Talladega races they’d ever watched?
Despite a thrilling final lap, the reaction to Sunday’s Cup Series race was decidedly mixed. Much of the criticism centered on the opening stage, when fuel conservation took precedence over the aggressive pack racing that has made Talladega famous.
And for some fans, a spectacular finish wasn’t nearly enough to make up for everything that came before it.
NASCAR Fans Blast Talladega’s Fuel-Saving Strategy
Talladega has built its reputation on unpredictability. Drivers run inches apart at nearly 200 mph, positions change constantly and a single mistake can collect half the field.
Sunday’s opening stage offered a very different spectacle.
With teams focused on stretching their fuel mileage, much of the field circulated at reduced speeds rather than fighting for position. RFK Racing eventually broke from the pack, allowing Brad Keselowski, Chris Buescher and Ryan Preece to build an enormous lead and sweep the stage’s top three positions.
The strategy worked brilliantly for RFK. It also highlighted exactly what some fans disliked about the race.
“One of the worst Dega races of all time, the last 10 laps were good tho,” one fan wrote in response to NASCAR reporter Jeff Gluck’s postrace discussion.
Another argued that the closing laps couldn’t redeem the rest of the afternoon.
“A great finish doesn’t mean it was a good race for many it seems,” the fan wrote, adding that NASCAR needed to address the fuel-saving tactics before the next Daytona 500.
Others were even more direct.
“1 good lap doesnt wash out the 99% of a boring shitty plate race,” one commenter wrote.
The complaints weren’t simply about a lack of passing. Fans questioned whether a race built around conserving fuel, rather than running at full speed, was delivering the kind of competition Talladega is supposed to provide.
Talladega’s Dramatic Finish Divides NASCAR Fans
Not everyone shared that frustration.
Larson’s last-lap comeback, which saw him fall outside the top 10 before charging back to win, provided an extraordinary finish. The RFK strategy also earned praise from viewers who appreciated seeing a team challenge the prevailing approach.
“After the first 30 laps it was great,” one fan wrote. “Loved seeing that RFK strategy play out and work.”
Another described the race as entertaining largely because RFK refused to follow the rest of the field’s fuel-saving strategy.
That disagreement gets to the heart of the debate.
For some viewers, strategy, unpredictability and an unforgettable finish are enough to make a Talladega race worthwhile. For others, the appeal lies in sustained, aggressive pack racing, not watching drivers spend long stretches managing fuel.
There is also an important distinction between a thrilling finish and an entertaining race from start to finish.
Sunday unquestionably delivered late drama. Whether it delivered enough racing before that remains a much more divisive question.
And judging by the reaction afterward, NASCAR’s superspeedway fuel-saving problem isn’t going away anytime soon.
