Kaiser Permanente’s Risant Health is poised to add its third health system while it searches for a new leader.
Oklahoma City-based Integris Health signed a definitive agreement Oct. 21 to join Risant, about seven weeks after founding CEO Jaewon Ryu, MD, stepped down from the role.
Here are six things to know about where Risant Health stands now:
1. Kaiser Permanente launched Risant in April 2023 as a nonprofit designed to expand value-based care in markets with multiple payers and providers. At launch, Kaiser agreed to make Danville, Pa.-based Geisinger Health its first member. The Geisinger deal closed nearly one year later, on March 31, 2024. Greensboro, N.C.-based Cone Health signed a definitive agreement in June 2024 and joined Dec. 1, 2024. Member systems keep their own names, brands, boards and leadership teams.
Greg Adams, chair and CEO of Kaiser Permanente, told Becker’s in August 2023 that competing with disruptors was part of the reason for starting Risant Health.
“As healthcare emerges from the worst effects of the pandemic, we are not seeing sufficient movement toward coming together, but rather, a resumption of the pre-pandemic business trends of consolidation, volume-driven care and a worsening of the fragmentation and gaps in our healthcare system,” Mr. Adams said. “While some new players share our vision of integrated value-based care for all, we see other new and disruptive market entrants whose business models seem aimed at serving just the healthiest people, which increases fragmentation and ultimately increases the cost of care for everyone.”
2. Risant announced in July that Dr. Ryu would step down from his role on Sept. 4 to focus on his family. Dr. Ryu became Risant’s chief executive after serving as CEO of Geisinger. As Risant’s inaugural CEO, he built its leadership team and oversaw the integration of Geisinger and Cone Health into the organization.
Dale Maxwell, the former president and CEO of Albuquerque, N.M.-based Presbyterian Healthcare Services, is serving as Risant’s interim CEO while the organization conducts a national search for Dr. Ryu’s permanent successor. Mr. Adams said the transition reflects “thoughtful planning, not a change in strategy” for Risant.
3. Risant Health recorded $12.6 billion in total operating revenue in 2025, its first full year with both member systems, according to Kaiser’s Feb. 13 financial report. About 72% of that came from Geisinger, roughly $9.1 billion, and the rest from Cone Health, roughly $3.5 billion. Health plan membership within Risant’s systems stood at about 500,000 at year-end.
Revenue has climbed through the midpoint of 2026, according to Kaiser’s Aug. 19 financial report. Risant posted $6.7 billion in operating revenue in the six months ended June 30, up 9.9% from $6.1 billion in the same period of 2025. The 72% Geisinger split held steady, and membership was flat at about 500,000. Risant accounted for about 9.6% of Kaiser’s $70.2 billion in total operating revenue for the period. Kaiser does not break out Risant’s operating income in its financial reports.
4. Kaiser has designated up to $5 billion to support Risant’s core capabilities, technologies, tools and future investments. Risant also committed to make at least $2 billion available to Geisinger through Dec. 31, 2028, for hospital, ambulatory, technology and other capital needs, inclusive of Geisinger’s internally generated funds. Risant also committed to make at least $1 billion available to Cone Health through the fifth anniversary of the deal’s closing, inclusive of Cone’s internally generated funds.
5. Risant said Geisinger has seen benefits amounting to nearly 1% of operating margin improvement since joining the organization. Through May 31, patients at Scranton, Pa.-based Geisinger Community Medical Center received emergency department care about 60% faster on average than before the hospital launched its Care Without Delay initiative, which streamlines care from the time a patient enters the emergency department through discharge.
At Cone, Risant is helping fund a $40 million rebuild of the system’s Epic platform after years of technical debt limited its ability to adopt newer capabilities. Cone CEO Paul Krakovitz, MD, told Becker’s in September that two Risant tools have been especially helpful. The first is value-based guidelines, which give clinicians evidence-based guidance in the EHR and can reduce specialist consultations. The second is Care Without Delay.
6. Integris is Oklahoma’s largest nonprofit health system, with 13,000 employees and 20 hospitals — 10 acute care and 10 specialty — along with the state’s largest physician network. Integris reported an operating loss of $22.3 million (-0.7% operating margin) on total operating revenue of $3.3 billion in fiscal 2025, which ended June 30, 2025. For the nine months ended March 31, 2026, the system recorded an operating loss of $1.1 million (0% margin) on total operating revenue of $2.7 billion.
